Nixon Resigned 46 Years Ago Today!

I was 38 years old--living in Memphis, Tennessee--Director of Operations for Weight Watchers--Johnny and I were living together--I had a townhouse, was driving a white Cadillac Convertible, traveling around the world and except for a minor problem I had a great life!
We were eating in the revolving restaurant on top of the UP building on Poplar Avenue when the announcement came.

Funny the things you remember when you see a picture and I saw the attached picture when I turned on the Internet today!

Do you remember where you were that day? Were you even born? :O)

I was packing up my office in stillwater ok and moving to Oklahoma City to be with the worst husband of my career. What a mistake!

And here I thought I was the only one in the world who made mistakes of the heart!!!

The timing is striking, isn't it. I guess I was in junior high. Seemed like it happened earlier in the summer, rather than August. I remember watching the Watergate hearings avidly. John Dean and his wife Mo stick in my memory, but I couldn’t understand why he would go do all these things, then confess them so completely. Why do them at all, when you have a conscience strong enough to come clean? I wondered. I remember his wife’s wearing miniskirts to the public hearings but then she blocked the press from getting photos of her legs by putting big folders on her lap.

Watergate, etc., all took place before his resignation on August 8 and if it wasn't for 2 reporters it never would have happened!1

I remember it well, after he said he wasn't a crook. I remember seeing the speech on TV probably on the evening news but I can't remember what was going on in my life. There are many things I don't remember but I don't know it until somebody tells me.

I remember every minute of those 10 years I spent in Memphis--best time of my life--a lot was going on in the world!

I was 23 years old, and didn't pay much attention to politics, was interning at Yale. My Aunt Jane, who lived in nearby New Haven followed the Nixon saga closely, and she was so thrilled when this happened. At the time her family was trying to get her to stop smoking, so tried the 'it's so expensive' tack . She bought a hand-operated machine that made cigarettes (it was more sophisticated than rolling a joint), and turned out a couple packs a night while she watched the proceedings on TV.

Now I feel like I'm channeling my Aunt Jane, keeping an eye on developments. Haven't taken up smoking yet.
