Marina Deli--restaurant Review

It's been a long time since I had been here and as soon as I tasted
my sandwich I asked myself, "Why?"!  For 20+ years it has been hidden
in the back of this shopping center and when the center was redone they
stayed where they were which sort of surprised me as there are now a lot
more restaurants in the front facing the street but they are
comfortable--and busy--where they are.
I did notice in some of the reviews the mention of Harry which I assume was the owner but has now passed away from my

eavesdropping and, assuming, hearing his wife saying that he had died.

In any  case we arrived about 15 minutes before closing time (3 PM) and
having been in the business I hate to eat in a place that has the chairs
up except for 2-3 tables but the lady insisted we come in and we did.
I
had the turkey on rye with lettuce, tomato, onion and mustard ($8.25)
while Allen had the Rachel ($9.25) consisting of hot pastrami,
sauerkraut and melted Swiss.and we both had fountain cokes ($1.75) with
free refills.
They serve a small souffle cup of coleslaw (very good) and  a real old fashioned sour pickle.

Comparing
the Marina Deli, on 17th Street in Fort Lauderdale, with the Pomperdale Deli on Commercial Boulevard they
come out even when it comes to the turkey sandwich regarding taste and
size but the former doesn't charge for the slaw and costs a bit less
while the Rachel was a little smaller at the Marina.

I go to the
Pomperdale Deli each time i visit my primary doctor--after weighing
in!--as he is next door but now that I am in the habit of going to the
Dollar Tree, in the Southport Shopping Center on 17th Street, every
Thursday it looks like I will be making more trips to the Marina Deli.

I live in between both so it will all depend on which direction I am going.
My
only complaint is that there isn't table service in either place but at
the Marina the counter guy did bring our sandwiches to the table. He
was either being nice or wanted to get us out though no one gave us any
suggestion they were in a hurry. I sort of felt better when another
party came in at 2:59!!!

How nice you rediscovered a place you like. Ordering at the counter can sometimes be intimidating for me because the people behind the counter can be brusque - New York Style, (and I don't get out much).

Actually the guys behind the counter were really nice considering one was getting ready to leave to pick up his kid at school and he had to stay because this stupid customer came in 15 minutes before closing!!!

I loved that .Not sure when was the last time I had Pastrami on rye or pumpernickel.
So you found a friend there.

I must be out of touch, although that is cheaper than Quisnos. The real sour pickle would be a plus also, and it's been sooo long since I've had pastrami! I can almost taste it! Guess you can't say too much about two sandwiches, but since you're going back you must have enjoyed it!
