The Women on the 6th Floor--a Movie Review

Looking
for a souffle as light as air? A sweet French comedy with 6 Spanish
women that will make you smile, sometimes shake your head but most times
make you feel happy ? The maids live on the top floor in small rooms
while the stick in the mud Frenchman, that they will change just by
being who they are, and his wife, live in the 6 floor building that was
owned by his grandfather then his father and he will leave to his 2
sons.

Jean-Louis
Joubert’s, played by Fabrice Luchini, life has been laid out for him
from the day he was born. He is not unhappy with his life as a
successful stockbroker, married to a country girl, Suzanne, played by
Sandrine Kiberlain, who has become a sophisticated city woman busy with
friends and living under the thumb of her mother-in-law. As the movie
opens the mother-in-law has died and Suzanne shows her newly found
independence redecorating the house which is met with outrage by the
long time family maid Germaine (Michele Gleizer) which leads to a fight
between the two women and the maid quitting and being fired at the same
time.

Maria,
(Natalia Verbeke), the sweet and pretty niece of another maid,
Concepcion, (Carmen Maura) tries out for the job and ,with the help of
the 4 other women, impresses Suzanne so much that at the end of the day
she hires Maria. In a separate conversation with Jean-Louis Maria asks
for and gets more pay than is offered to her.

How
the aforementioned maids plus the others; Dolores (Berta Ojea), Teresa
(Nuria Sole) and Pilar (Concha Galan change the lives of the Jouberts
and how they change the lives of the maids is the joy of discovery this
movie brings you. Some of the changes will be surprising while others
will be expected though even they will bring surprises.

The
screenplay co-written by the director, Philippe Le Gua, and Jerome
Tonnerre, sometimes verges on Hollywood influences but pull back just in
time. While this is not a must see movie there are a lot of reasons to
see it, the main one being to enjoy yourself and leave the theatre
smiling.
