HEADLINE: CITIES OPPOSE ETHICS LAW, WANT
BAN ON GIFTS EASED
Commissioner Lisa
Aronson said, "The gift ban is too
strict. We can't always afford to pick up our own meals or event tickets." She
also said city officials were hoping to loosen some of the restrictions on
lobbying because some of them work as lobbyists and would no longer be
able to represent clients in front of
other city governments. (DUH!)
15 city, county or
school board members or their family members have ben charged with or imprisoned for public
corruption crimes in the past two years.

HEADLINE: LEGISLATORS PUT ASIDE MILLIONS
FOR REDISTRICTING
The Florida
(Republican) Legislation stockpiled more than $30 million on redistricting
litigations later this year , even as lawmakers cut funding for health care,
education and public services.
The (Republican) Senate gave itself a 26%
spending boost. The House is sitting on $30 million in 'discretionary'
funds.
"Florida taxpayers are paying so legislators
can wage a legal battle against reforms overwhelmingly supported by the
people."
The Florida
Legislature is taking a second stab at asking voters to repudiate last year's
sweeping federal health care reform. The amendment is similar to the one that
never made it to voters after the Florida Supreme Court determined its ballot
summary was misleading.
The Florida House
sent a measure to voters asking them whether they thought public dollars should
be spent on insurance policies that cover abortions. The Bill is just one of
several abortion the Florida Legislation has considered this
session.
The effort to change the structure of the
Supreme Court may be over for this year but it is not over.
The Florida Senate
is poised to vote Thursday on a comprehensive rewrite of election laws that
would limit early voting, change registration practices and other laws that
Democrats say the intent would be to hold down turnout of their party's voters
in presidential election years.
(BY THE WAY NOT A WORD ABOUT THE ECONOMY
OR NEW JOBS!)
