Horrible Bosses---a Movie Review

It
seems the cruder, ruder, more vulgar, trashy and gutter level a comedy
is these days the more money it makes and the more successful it is
considered. Just in the past few months we have had "Hangover 2",
"Bridesmaid" and "Bad Teacher".  There are scenes of people vomiting,
homophobic jokes, men's crotches being slammed into by various objects,
definitely, literally, toilet humor
, women being put down, even by other women and the worse a character acts the bigger a hero he, or she, will turn out to be.

I
really went into "Horrible Bosses" with an open mind telling myself I
can enjoy off color jokes, laugh at crass situations, down and dirty
humor and planned on sitting back and enjoying the movie. I wish I had
seen "9 To 5" which had smart writing, funny situations and lines and a
plot that didn't meander all over the place, handling a similar
situation. Where is Dollly Parton when you need her?

Jason
Bateman, Jason Sudeikis and Charlie Day want to kill their bosses Kevin
Spacey, Colin Farrell and Jennifer Aniston, in a script by Michael
Markowitz, John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein, which meanders all
over the place, putting most of the words below the belt. It seems each
writer handled a 'boss situation' without consulting with each other
yet the script makes sense even if it doesn't entertain.

As
far as performances go it has been a while since I have enjoyed a Kevin
Spacey performance but he hams it up enough here to elicit a few laughs
which are more than other cast members get. Donald Sutherland adds a
lot of dignity at the beginning of the film but, sadly, has only about 2 minutes in it. Why, oh why, did Jenifer Aniston take her role unless she wanted to show she still has a great body?
Colin Farrell really does a bad job while, with each role, Jason Bateman fades away more and more. Charlie Day's voice is as annoying as most of the hijinks while Jason Sudeikis almost shines.

My
suggestion is that if you haven't seen "9 To 5" see it instead of
"Horrible Bosses" and if you have seen it see it again. You will laugh
more at the former without the assault on your ears and brain.
