Before I get into the movie itself let me say that I was very impressed with Jason Segal. He struck me as a warmer, more accessible, cuddlier, less body aware than Vince Vaughn. He certainly is very comfortable with his body--less than perfect like most of us--as he appears in full frontal and rear nudity at the beginning and the end of the movie.
Now on to the movie--"Forgetting Sarah Marshall" is a romantic comedy with what seems a must in so many of them today--crude, raunchy humor that really doesn't add anything to the film accept trying to reach the teenage boys in the male audience. I didn't find it funny but an old man in front of me obviously found his inner teenager as he laughed at it all.
Aside from the unnecessary raunchy scenes my major complaint about the movie was that it was far too long at 1 hour and 55 minutes and cluttered with characters that added nothing to the film. There is a stoner surfer,a waiter and a newlywed couple that have nothing to do with the main story and characters except provide some crude humor. And I have no idea what the 'step' brother and his girlfriend were doing in this movie.
Aside from Jason Segel the other main male character is Russell Brand who, in a way, is funny with some of his moves but it is incomprehensible that Kristen Bell would become his lover but, then again, seems a lot of pretty women go for the 'bad' rock 'n roll guy so what do I know??
The main angle of the screenplay is seeing the effects of a break up from a guy's point of view. It opens with Kristen dumping Jason and, as only can happen in a Hollywood movie, they wind up in Hawaii, he alone and she with her new lover Russell.
We already know there will be someone to help Jason mend his heart and it turns out to be Mila Kunis who is the receptionist at the hotel they all are staying. I found her warmer, more attractive than Kristen but I think the warmth has a lot more to do with how the part was written.
I will say it was different to see the average looking man with average intelligence be involved with pretty women instead of the 'pretty boy' type as is usually the case (insert your own dream man) in romantic comedies.
The script does hold back from following some of the deeper themes in their reach for the comedy but it is a comedy. I'm a sucker for romantic stories and, generally, a hard sell on comedies and I think that's where this film failed for me. I didn't find much of the comedy funny and except for the Jason and Mila pairing there wasn't too much chemistry between the four leads and not too much between the two mentioned.
The ending is a rip off of the Broadway show "Avenue Q" and no where as melodic, satiric or funny as that show.
The bottom line is that I won't recommend this movie for either the romance or the comedy. I do recommend it for those who like raunchy, crude lines and actions so I guess it will do good at the box office! :O)
