LIVING WELL, AND HAVING GOOD FRIENDS, IS THE BEST REVENGE!
"...in
1959 the first ever buffet salad bar debuted at Chuck's Steak House!"
is from the web page of Chuck's Steak House, which had opened in 1973. I
don't know how true that is but I remember going to Chuck's a lot in
the early 1980s and, for some reason, haven't been back since the
mid-80s.
Being
the first of the month Allen and I decided to have a special lunch and
we debated between the Outback and Chuck's with the latter winning. They
have completely redone the whole inside of the restaurant to the point I
didn't recognize any of it.
Also
the menu has changed! "... A 12 oz. Top Sirloin steak was $2.95" Now,
at lunch, a 9 ounce steak cost $16.50 and if you want the salad bar,
which is just a basic salad bar--hasn't changed since 1973!--it is an
additional $4. As many restaurants are doing today, and it has nothing
to do with helping customers lose weight, Chuck's doesn't have bread
service except on the salad bar for that extra $4. LOL We were seated in a little nook opposite the open grill surrounded on 3 sides by 5 feet brick walls.
Our
waiter Romeo was excellent, taking and getting our drink order--Allen
iced tea ($2.25) and me coffee ($2.25) right away, giving us time to
look the menu over. We both ordered the 9 ounce steak with Allen getting
the baked potato and I the sweet potato, which was included with a
mixture of fresh vegetables. The meal was served in a reasonable time
and Romeo saw that our drinks were refilled without our having to ask.
The
bottom line is the steak was excellent, melting in my mouth, the
vegetables and potato hot and, along with the service, a very good lunch
that we can't do more than once a month! The check, with tax and tip,
came to $48--back to 2-4-1 lunches!
