Where's My Panic Room?

I am getting into full panic mode. Hurricane Irene is expected to hit here as a possible category 2 storm. To people who live in florida that might sound like nothing to them. But to us here in Delaware that's a big one. The hurricanes are usually tropical storms by the time they get here. I will be bringing things inside today from the yard. I think they are saying saturday night thru sunday it could hit here.

We had our first earthquake on Tuesday. I was in the grocery store and noticed the boxes of tastykakes were kind of dancing on the shelf. Then I got real dizzy as it felt like the floor was going up and down. I had no idea at the time what it was. But then my phone started going off with people calling me. We didn't have any real damage here, just some shaking.

I am still unemployed but I have become a jedi master at stretching our food budget! Hubby has been bragging about how I am able to get so much food for little money. I have mad skills.

I have also reconnected with an old friend and she and I do the thrift store shopping. I got a designer purse for $10! I don't normally have designer purses, just walmart ones. My friend will buy things and then sell them on ebay for an amazing profit. We are researching different things to get an idea on what is a good item.

Dakota is preparing for 5th grade, he starts next wednesday. I am already getting sad about it! It has been a treasure being home with him this summer.

Things are not all roses and sunshine but we make it through as a family. We have had help from some very good friends who realized we were really struggling. My payment to them is banana bread and pretzel salad per their request.

Stepson is kind of on hubby's shit list right now. In a moment of desperation I asked him if we could borrow some money. He is working as a contractor over in Iraq making more money than he ever dreamed of. His response to us? 'We are not lending money to people anymore.' Really? I guess he forgot who raised him and housed him after he got out of the army and the rent he never paid us. That's kind of a huge slap in the face for his Dad. He was a single parent taking care of his two kids since they were little. His daughter was only a baby when his wife and him split up.

I might be posting pics later of some of my thrift store finds. I got this really cute tea set! A 6 piece set for around $8.00.

Time to start battening down the hatches! (whatever that means) LOL

I love thrift stores. I have friends who scout them and then sell designer
findings on ebay. You might look into that because there are people who
make a living at this. They sell designer items and the one who does very
well goes for the name brand dolls like Madame Alexander and designer
purses and shoes.

Best of luck! Hope the storm doesn't hit you too hard. Kids can really be ungrateful sometimes. It hurts.

it really hurt his Dad. they might not have had alot of luxuries growing up but he did the best he could as a single dad.
I am as prepared as I am going to be. my nerves are kind of getting bad right now. I am a worrier in normal times so when something like this happens I go into full blown panic.

I am worried about power outages and having enough food on hand. I think we are ok. but it is hard to be really prepared when you are already living paycheck to paycheck. ugh! just want it to be over with.

And what exactly were you doing in the Tasty Cakes aisle at that particular moment? Window shopping? We don't have them out here in the west, but I've heard of them and one time brought some back to Colorado from a business trip to New Jersey for a co-worker who originated in the east.

kota is all ready for school, not that he wants to go! it's been great hanging out with him all summer. he has even gotten into my thrift store shopping. He will be in 5th grade this year! where has the time gone? he is still my sidekick and keeps me laughing on a daily basis.

We haven't had a hurricane hit here in 6-7 years so we are due for one but Irene isn't it--right now ti is nice outside--I know the weather is just waiting for me to go out to do food shopping in an hour and then the skies will open up!

hey when i did my shopping tuesday, we had the earthquake! that will teach me to grocery shop!

We have been getting rain so far--typical Florida rainy season weather--in fact the sun is coming out now but that won't last!

funny thing is we are getting storms today not related to irene! so the ground will be nice and saturated when Irene blows through. You are probably and old pro at hurricanes!

Wow that is sad that they won't lend you any money esp when they are able too. I hope he regrets that decision soon. I am glad you have learned to stretch the food! You go girl!!! Have they mentioned your area evacuating? My cousin lives in MD 5 minutes from the beach and I am truly trying to get her to evacuate... I hope she does... As for us I think I will stock up on water and make sure we have batteries -- that should ease my mind some. Stay safe!!!!
comment by kristilyn3 on Aug 25, 2011 7:08 AM ()
we shouldn't have to evacuate, we are kind of further inland. I am keeping up to date on the news though. kota gets mad when i keep switching to the weather channel!
all I have to say about my stepson is karma is a #####.
urge your cousin it is better to be safe than sorry! we could have high storm surge because of the moon or something like that.

I know what you mean about prepping up for the approaching Irene. Everyone here in RI is in the same state of mind. They seem sort of iffy as to how bad things are going to be when she comes through because she is likely to weaken, but no one is really sure about how much she is going to weaken.
That sounds great about the thrift store bargain hunting, though.

I was thinking of you watching the weather channel this morning when they were mentioning Rhode Island! I always freak out when these storms come, but this one looks like it could be bad up here.
thrift stores are so cool. People do not realize what they are getting rid of!
