At kota's school they have a celebration on the 100th day of school. Usually kids bring in candy, junk food. this year his teacher had the kids bring in canned goods to donate to a local food pantry. They wanted 100 cans and got 400! The kids were all excited to help out needy families, they even had a speaker come in from the food pantry to explain what they do. Well kota came home yesterday with another cool thing. They have a list of chores and for each chore they do, the parents give the child a penny. They want each kid to raise 50 cents.
The organization they are donating the money to is Heifer Project International. What this organization does is provides a goat to an African family. The goat provides milk for the family and any extra can be sold, earning the family much needed money. 'And because goats often have two or three kids a year, heifer partners can lift themselves out of poverty by starting samll dairies that earn money for food, health care and education.' One goat costs $120.00.
I think it is wonderful they are teaching these kids about helping others. And I think this sounds like a great organization. However, I also feel there is a need in our own country to be helping families.
