Gardening Help!

I need some gardening help. My mom has this shrub, I believe it is Jasmine. Last year it was just beautiful and it smells divine! So it is starting to come out again now. I took some cuttings and have put them in a jar of water. I have also read to put them in a flower pot with a plastic bag over it for high humidity. Has anyone ever tried this and will it work? This is how I get most of my plants, by stealing the babies from mom! Thats how I got my forsythia bush. I am hoping these cutting will grow. I can see why someone would love jasmine perfume!

Mary, here is what a plant expert recommends to propagate jasmine:

"Cuttings are without question the easiest method of propagating jasmine. Simply cut a tender shoot that is at least six inches long. Remove the lower sets of leaves. Dip the cutting in a rooting compound. You can purchase this product at any garden center. Stick the cutting one inch into a good potting mix. Be sure to thoroughly wet the soil prior to planting. Finally, cover the pot with a clear piece of lightweight plastic. Place the pot in indirect sunlight on an east window sill or under fluorescent lighting. After two weeks, check to see if the plant has rooted by slightly pulling on the stem. If you feel resistance, remove the plastic covering and be sure to keep the soil moist. The plant should then be treated as any other seedling."

Hope this helps!

If you use the plastic bag method, make sure to keep the plan in bright conditions but out of 'direct' sunlight, take the cuttings out of the bag when the roots have developed, acclimatize the plant indoors for about 3 weeks before planting into a larger pot. Only plant it into it's final resting place once the frost has gone. It'll take till next year to strengthen properly, but if you follow these steps, the plant should flower beautifully next year

One of my best memories of the 10 years of living in Memphis was waking up to a perfume factory--the whole city smelled of jasmine!!

Mary, I am not sure what type of plant you have; it does not look like the jasmine plants we have here. Our flowers are larger but yours could be a different variety. You are right, the smell is out of this world...kinda like the magnolia.
