My Tiny Garden

Gardening is good for the soul but hell on hands. I scrubbed for 10 minutes and my nails still don't look
clean. Of course I could wear gloves but they hinder me
and take away from the experience.

I planted three tomatoes, all early girls and protect
them at night under glass jars. I put sage and basil
in containers and planted three pink hydrageas. I have
to cover them all at night but they are a pleasure during
the day. I got a big hanging pot of begonias and one
of the airplane plant.

Today, I need to transplant some mint to a container and
fertilize the roses.

A friend was cutting down 2 maple trees so I got a
neighbor to help and we got a rick of wood to season.
I did most of the loading while he cut it in fireplace
chunks. It was hard work but left me feeling very good
from the workout. Physical work and a good book are
distractions.

I have tried all kinds of shoes for walking, Nike, those
gravity sneakers with springs, New Balance but the pair
that works for me are the Reeboks with the funny sole.
Mine were wearing out so I found them online. They
cradle my feet. It is amazing to be able to walk a mile
and be on my feet all day without pain.

Plant something even if it is in a container!!

Here's a thought. Before you begin, slather your hands in hand lotion. It might make clean-up easier. Maybe even "wash" in lotion as you go, wiping off with paper towels. (an office memory, difficult boss observed me "washing" hands at desk with lotion and raised his eyebrows and I said, "I never get to go to the bathroom on this job."

I am making an effort to put on lotion and then gloves. It seems to help
but my hands and feet are ugly from arthritis. Woe is me!

I am close to nature but do not have the inclination to help it along. I tried here and there when we were first down here, was very proud of my flower beds and twice hurricanes returned them to mud. Kind of takes the joy out of things. Also, I am not strong enough to garden and I now realize that my back problem might have been present for years.

You don't have to garden, you can see dolphins cavort from your house.

I keep trying to grow mint, and it doesn't take off. Possibly the altitude is too high, although we used to have a lot of catnip. I know someone who has a lot of mint in her yard, so I'll see if I can get some more from her.

The mint is everywhere but I don't mind, it smells good when the twins
mow it down and some in a container will be great for iced tea. I got
new cushions for the wicker setee and I am anticipating porch time.

. I'm ready to plant. I bought my seeds when Walmart had them in January. But it snowed an inch last night and it will snow again tomorrow and the ground is still frozen and covered with snow so it will be awhile.

We have a pattern of rain and chilly weather and then later in the week a
few really warm days. This weather you are having will make camp
that much more enjoyable.

Ah gardening. I need to pony a whole bunch of stuff this year, I said I'd be a part of farm to table to help the less fortunate have fresh produce. I do have a black thumb so I'm hoping for the best!

There is nothing like fresh vegetables from the garden and I admire
your taking it on while the kidlets are so little. It is very good for
us to be so close to nature. A lot of people cannot afford fresh
produce so it is a great contribution.
