And Old Age Nightmare

My daughter is involved in a nightmarish situation with
her father and his wife. I have a smidgen of feeling for
her father because we grew up together. He is 89 and deep
into alzheimer's. His other daughter has medical power
of attorney so she put him in assisted living where he
constantly gets lost. His wife, Linda's stepmother no
longer wanted to live with him but she was forced into
assisted living by Sherry. So now she has either had
a stroke or her body is messed up from anorexia. She
falls down all the time but refuses to use a cane.

The step mother was mean to Linda so she is not going to
be involved in her medical problems but she has to visit
her Dad every night even though she has a grown, severely
autistic son at home. She and her husband take turns
going. He is in the hospital now because a CNA put his
catheter in wrong and injured him badly.

I guess the moral to this story is that life is gonna
get you somehow when you are old and helpless, despite
having plenty of money and good health insurance. There
are lots of things worse than dying.

Right there, a story like that is enough to scare us all into doing whatever we can to stay in good shape.

Yes indeed. Oklahoma has cracked down on pain medicine and is making it
harder for legitimate pain meds to be given to those who need them.

Yup, there are things worse than dying; much worse. I remember laying in the hospital with pain meds and pain form pancreatitus. I expected to recover, but I remember thinking that there was a geezer in a nursing home somewhere in that shape who had no hope.

The nursing homes are not staffed with the cream of the crop. Pancreatitus is so painful and I am sorry you had to endure it. I am
hoping for legalized medical marijuana for Bobby and for others who need
it but it ain't gonna happen in Oklahoma.

So sorry to hear this. A mom with an autistic son doesn't need any more to deal with. Hope the hospital takes good care of her dad. When he is back in the nursing facility, it may be a good idea to give candy or small presents to the CNAs if he has mostly the same ones. They are often a group paid badly and treated poorly too by the nursing homes -- which is a recipe for trouble. They can resent their work. Friendly relationships with families whose parent they care for can help the situation a lot. And if a CNA is doing catheters there, they are probably way, way understaffed. In my state CNAs aren't even permitted to attend to those -- not at all.

It is my understanding that a CNA is never to do an invasive procedure.
However, the nursing home contracts with a medical service and with the
amount of money that these two are paying they should get better treatment. Your idea about small gifts is a good one. I had to laugh
when Linda's stepmother decided she didn't want to live with her
husband anymore. No one relishes living with an alzheimer's patient but you signed on for it when they were young and frisky.

Ed is dealing with a ward who is now falling all the time and is authorizing a move to long-term care. He stands between the bureaucracy and the wards and is doing good work. There is no end to the grief some later life issues can heap on you. Sorry Linda has to endure this.

Ed is doing a wonderful job and you can understand what I mean when I
say no matter how much money or how good the insurance there are people
who fall through the cracks. Sometimes the system fails us.

True. I feel for your daughter (and you).

Thank you Kristy. You have a kind heart and I admire you for being
true to your principles. We need all the sympathy we can get!
