A Sense of Neighborhood

My body rebelled but I forced myself to walk last night
and was so glad that I did. There all sorts of reasons
to walk at night and sleeping better is just one. However,
the reason that appeals to me most is the encounters with
neighbors. People are lonely and a simple hello and a
smile mean a lot.

There was an elderly woman wrapped in a quilt sitting on
her porch who was eager for a chat. The twins and Julia
were walking their dog and a foster one as well. We
enjoyed greeting one another. Mike, my neighbor across
the street, and I met several blocks from home and shared
a conversation.

Martha Adams, our blog friend, posted on Facebook how
much simple kindness and courtesy greased our journey
through life. We all know this but sometimes we need to
be reminded.

If I were a dog, I would like to be a Golden Retriever.
They greet the world with a wagging tail and a confident
smile that says, "Let's be best friends." They do not
fear rejection as people frequently do.
\
We need to always remember that words can be injurious
and sometimes we never heal from the wounds they inflict.
We can't love everyone but we can try to understand where
they are coming from.

I could walk for miles without meeting a neighbor, which is the way I like it. Your story does remind me of the old days in Middle Village tho. Houses were close together or attached and dozens of people could be found sitting out in the summer on one block.

I like crunching through the woods in autumn but I also like visiting
with my neighbors. I live in a neighborhood with a lot of boomers and
grandparents and great grandparents.

I am very gregarious in public, chatting with anyone I'm sharing space with. I haven't been walking much, but when I get back to it, I expect to meet new people. Several I knew have passed and I miss them. In the market, I often strike up conversations and people are 99 percent responsive. Occasionally, there is the rare curmudgeon. Ed is in cardio rehab and he said he was willing to join me in a modest daily walk. So far, he hasn't wanted to. I'm working on him.

Dramus has a great suggestion. Men love anything that is techno savvy
and it would be so good for Ed. It is good for the soul, the mind and
the body but I just had a giant glass of Kahlua and cream and I don't
know if I will make it tonight or not.

I was just thinking about my walks and how my ipod makes them so much nicer. Maybe he'd like one for walking? There are free podcasts of news and so much else.

Sometimes I miss having neighbors, but usually I don't. Haha
I went to the grocery store this AM with Sawyer. I saw an elderly man walking in as we werI walking out and smiled at him. He smiled back and said good morning... Little things like that make me smile! Then when I was putting my cart back a lady commented that Sawyer was finally done talking and that she enjoyed him while checking out. Kindness rocks!

It certainly does and you are a kind person. With your busy schedule
and two toddlers, time for chatting is limited. I loved those days
in retrospect.
