Rex and His Phobia

It took four years for Rex to overcome his insane fear of
the black and white tiles in the kitchen and utility room.
Four years of never walking on them, four years eyeing
them suspiciously when he walked by. Suddenly, he has
started coming in the kitchen and walking on the black and
white floors, only to develop a new phobia.

This time it is the iron. I don't know if it is the hiss
of the steam or the ironing board that he fears. When I
iron, which is a very infrequent thing, he cowers under a
table in Ted's workroom while keeping a watch on the enemy.

I cannot help but laugh at this huge dog, all ll9 lbs of him,
hiding from the iron but feeling compelled to keep a wary
eye on it.

Rex is a people dog. He loves everyone and we couldn't
love him more but he was a victim of harsh punishment when
he was a puppy by his first owner. It must be P.T.S.D.

Some people should never own dogs

That is so true. Almost every day there is a story about animal abuse in
the paper even though people are urged to take unwanted animals to the
humane society.

Love your Rex! And, by the way, my cats are on his side. They think the iron is a mini vacuum!

It could be a snake!

Oh that dog!!! I love him regardless of his strange phobias. Maybe try throwing treats to him while you iron? I wonder what changed to let him be ok with the kitchen floor... Dogs are interesting creatures indeed.

I have no idea why he decided to accept the kitchen floor. The iron thing
is brand new since I have done a small amount of ironing over the years.
He used to be afraid to go into Ted's workroom but he has overcome that
fear too.

Was he okay with the iron before he switched phobias? I thought he might have been deliberately burned with one in his puppy life. It's really funny about the tiles. They must have looked like holes to him.

Yes, oddly enough he was ok with the iron until this last time I used it.
I don't think he was ever burned with an iron but the former owners hit him
with sticks for jumping and threw things at him. I was so glad they let
me have him. They should never own a pet. We rescued Rex and a former
neighbor took a little terrier they were beating on. I don't understand
such cruelty.

Both my boys have their own issues. I suppose it's not all that uncommon from what I hear. I am terribly claustrophobic myself, so I just help them deal with this stuff.

Unfortunately there are times when I have to use the iron, not often but
when I am hemming something. We tried getting him to go in our bedroom which
is his security blanket but he insisted on watching that evil iron from the
safety of underneath a table.
