Petra Rabbit's Mother's Day

A little brown rabbit that we call Petra has a smorgasbord
of grasses and weeds in our back yard every morning. I
have noticed that she is getting stout and matronly. I
am careful to keep Rex in when she is having breakfast.
She isn't a very cautious little cotton tail.

This morning, she is carrying wet grasses to a nest she
is foolishly making in the roots of a crepe myrtle inside
a flower bed. It is a sight to see this little bunny
carrying grass in her mouth and depositing it in a nest.
I do hope the birth is not going to take place for several
days. She has chosen a wet and muddy spot even though the
roots of the plant form an enclosure for her babies.

I want her to be able to raise her little family in
peace and out of the weather. If she can wait until
tomorrow, she should have a much better chance.

How unusual to be able to watch her build the nest. My old rabbit some years back would grow long fur under her chin like a ruff, then all of a sudden she'd pull it out all at once and her neck would be normal again. She left a little black & white heap of the fur in her cage. I guess it grew periodically in case she had babies and it made nesting material.

I had never seen a rabbit build a nest before and had no idea they carried the material in their mouth. The babies are not here yet or she
may have gone to higher ground and chosen another site since the lowest
spots are flooding. Your rabbit must have been dreaming of maternity.

Good thing she's a picky picker and doesn't disturb you edibles. Very fortunate.

She seems to like only grass and weeds but of course I don't have room
for carrots and such. Just herbs and tomatoes and roses and hydrangeas.

Oh how exciting! I hope Rex isn't too "fascinated" with her. I so wish you could post pictures!!!

She has no fear, not even a reasonable amount. I chaperone Rex when
he goes out and he has been in trouble for digging in that flower bed
so we may be able to protect them. I wish I was better at pictures.

Eloise has her eye on the rabbit next door, waiting to catch the babies. I hate when that happens, but nothing we can do about it.

There is no way we can keep predators away from these innocent creatures.
They break my heart.

Awww. Did you know Petra is a Greek word that means rock? I hope she thrives.

No, I didn't know that. I hope she survives. The sun is out so I am
hoping for a little dry weather. The rain has spoiled the roses and
given me a lot of trash to sweep up.
