Margaret Atwood Being Wierd

Margaret Atwood is one heck of a novelist in the traditional way and her science fiction is totally off the
wall. I checked out a fairly new novel of hers called
The Heart Is The Last to Go and was transported to an
alternate universe. It was interesting but I can't say
that I liked it a lot or could muster up much empathy
for Charmaine and Stan, the main characters. I like her
work much better when she leaves fantasy behind.

I read at least one book every day and I am sure it is
because I am escaping an unexciting reality. I should
be doing something more creative with my time but I
am not inspired to paint or make jewelry.

Phyllis gave me a huge bag of garage sale leftovers, mostly
glasses, coffee cups and milk glass which I am going to
pass on to Sara.

I just talked to Fredo and Mike and they are both well,
as is their black dog, Ruby. They are ready to garden
but the weather is too cold.

For awhile, I thought I would start a list to keep track of which page in each book it became clear where the book title came from. A second list would be the books where that exact phrase is never used in the book. I mostly read e-books now, but still think about when I'd turn a page in a real book, and the way the spaces between the words lined up on the page make a vertical winding path down the page, in the style of Lewis Carroll's The Mouse's Tale in one of the Alice in Wonderland books. In theory, it could happen on an e-reader, but I haven't messed with font size etc. to try to get it to happen.

I like my Kindle but love real books. I use the Kindle for music
and movies and I wouldn't be without it.

I know I've read stuff by Atwood, but I just can't think what. I think my forgetting is because I was mad at her for something she said about publishers.

The book that she wrote called The Handmaid's Tale was my favorite. It
was a traditional novel. The science fiction came later. I suspect
you would like her science fiction more than I do.

I haven't read any Margaret Atwood, but I did just discover Dick Francis, who writes crime stories with horse racing as a backdrop (he was a steeplechase jockey in his young life). Super mysteries. Interesting to note that his editor, Joan Kahn, was at Harper & Row while I was there too. Too bad I never met him. I should have leaned on her for an introduction. Hindsight.

I like how Dick Francis's protagonists have such interesting life stories aside from the plot, and they are not all jockeys, even though there's always horses involved.

Dick Francis is a favorite of Laura's. Just think, you could have met
a legend if only you had known.

I have such a soft spot for Dick Francis and anything he wrote. The first novel of his I read was I think Smokescreen, where he's imprisoned in a car... That had one of the strongest beginnings ever.

Someday I will get back to reading more... I think that reading is a completely healthy way to escape reality...

You've got that right. When I get into an interesting book, all else dissolves. Me in the mist, reading, reading.

You do so have your hands full of toddlers right now. With both of
them and the dogs, I am sure you keep busy.
