Other Lives

This would be more correctly titled other marriages. We
owned a few thoroughbred horses and since horses have a
distinct preference for women, I took care of them. We had
a thorough bred stallion named Flying Drifter and he was my
favorite. When people came to look at him, he put on a fearful show, pawing the ground and giving the chilling stallion call and scaring the bejesus out of people.

One time I fell down in the pen where two horses were fighting
and saw my life flash before me. They didn't slow down...
they jumped over me.

When you watch the Super Bowl on Sunday, look for the tiny
Clydesdale Filly. She is a beauty. The Budweiser Team is
so thrilling to watch, manicured to a tee, with those huge
hoofs.

There is a lot of heartbreak when you love animals but it
is always worth it for the rewards. When we had a horse
racing, I always worried about them. Racing is a cruel
sport and horses break down at the track. This is one
reason that I don't go anymore. I attribute this to trainers and owners who want to get every bit of mileage
that they can out of a horse.

I haven't ever ridden a horse or wanted to.. I adopted the philosophy some time ago that I Wouldn't want some animal riding on me so why should I ride on it? But they do fascinate me. Such giants!

Adored my years caring for and riding horses! Such wonderful animals! Blissful memories! When I can, I still like to visit the horse farm barn where I rode. Love hearing the happy clucks and happy hello winnies when I walk in with apples and carrots.

Guess I'm a dog guy... they say horses and pigs and I suppose other animals are intelligent, but I never got involved with other species. Probably for the best...

There isn't a species of domesticated animal that I haven't owned and loved.

Have loved horses since early teens. Rode at a stables two hours away. Sis and I would get up at 4 a.m. and take a streetcar, a bus, and an interstate bus to get there and then the stables owner would pick us up along with other riders. We would take the "breakfast ride" and then spend the day at the barn. It was another life. We wound our way home smelling of horses. The other passengers would keep their distance. Envy you your experience with thoroughbreds.

Horses are a lot like cats in temperament, I have always thought. They are
especially curious creatures. I am glad you had the wonderful experience.
I love the way they smell.

My uncle back east owned part of a race horse, and it was certainly a rich peoples' folly, but he liked the idea of it and didn't care how much of his investment he never saw again.

They are certainly expensive, the trainers get a chunk of change. Back then,
it was 25 to 35 dollars a day. Now it is probably four times that.
