Gardening

The weather has been so crazy that plants freeze and then swelter but we seem to be well into summer now, skipping spring altogether. I was so happy to see roses blooming, which were not normal...they had sort of deformed buds on them, that I went out and bought flowers.

I got three hanging baskets, two Hibiscus and a Mandavalya vine. Also petunias for a flower bed. Most of the flowers are red except for the hanging baskets of petunias. It gets too hot on the south for most things. I also have two 4.4 raised garden beds in the back and various containers. I got three tomato plants, all heavy and blooming and 6 okra plants. I also have 2 squash plants.
We can never find Okra in the summer and we love it, also summer squash is huge in the store and the baby squash is far better. If the weather Gods cooperate we might have nice veggies this summer.

I have the twins mowing weekly and that is a blessing.

I go for my cardiology work up on the l4th and Linda will
be here on the l6th. Although we talk almost every day, it will be such a pleasure to see her.

One of the salads we looked for every spring was wilted lettuce. I make it with spinach now but I was wondering, is it a southern thing or does everyone make it? It is our favorite salad.

The appliance Gods have frowned on me, I had to buy a new fridge and a new washing machine but the old refrigerator is going in the garage for beverages and food storage.
It is due to get repaired finally on the eleventh.

I don't know what wilted lettuce is either. I've been looking for other greens since the romaine scare. Your setup sounds great, you'll have fresh things later on right there.

I guess it is a southern thing. You fry 4 or 5 bacon strips and drain to crisp. Measure 1/3 cup of bacon grease and l/3 cup of white vinegar and pour in the hot pan to sizzle. add a pinch of sugar and then put in a container of spinach, a diced tomato and a handful of mushrooms. It will serve two because the spinach wilts and when wilted you dish it up.Crumble the crisp bacon in it before serving. It is probably not healthy but most good food is not.

I am in awe of your gardening skills. A friend, now gone, gave me a tomato plant a while back. He told me how to care for it, I was very careful and it died anyway. I don't know what wilted lettuce is. Do you buy regular lettuce and snarl at it? And it wilts under your withering gaze?

See my instructions to Dramus. It would be easier to snarl at it. It is good with spinach and probably more nutritious. My mother made it with new leaf lettuce right out of the garden.

My family made wilted lettuce with summer greens from the garden, the only time they made it. It was: cut up bacon fried and set aside; make a dressing using the bacon grease, vinegar, and sugar. Pour hot over the lettuce and garnish with diced hard cooked egg and the bacon.

much as I like bacon (Ed won't eat it), the thought of using bacon grease is not appealing.

I hate eggs so I leave them out and add tomato and mushrooms. We love it and I make it pretty often.
