Dysfunctional Families

I have come to believe that all families are dysfuctional
to a degree. After watching August Osage County which I
loved, I realized that the Meryl Streep character was almost
exactly like my mother brought to life again. She spent
her life spoiling for a fight with her children and her
sisters. She antagonized both her daughters to the degree
that my sister escaped at sixteen and I left home at
seventeen. After my Dad died, she became addicted to pills
and threatened to disinherit us when we intervened. Her
father, my grandfather, sexually abused my cousins. We
escaped because we wouldn't have tolerated it.

I have no doubt that Mama loved us in her warped way. Her
whole life was wrapped up in my father. My sister and I
have often marveled at the fact because we would give up
our lives for our children.

Unlike Martin, I loved the movie and plan to see it again.
All the characters were good actors. I think the movie
got bad reviews because Oklahomans are not understood.
The harsh climate and the wind may have something to do
with it but it breeds strong men and women that do what
is necessary even when it is painful. Tracy Letts, the
author is an Oklahoman and he understands us.

If you mother's father abused your cousins, is it also possible he abused your mother? That could be the answer to some of her dysfunction. I used to think we were a confrontational family but not dysfunctional but my b.i.l. changed all that. Alienated my sister from our cousins, and anyone else he thought might interfere with his total control. He didn't try so much with me early on -- just later.

Yes, I have often thought that mother and her next younger sister were
probably abused sexually. They married at fifteen and sixteen to get
away from home.

The statistic that was offered in one of my undergraduate Social Work courses was 97 percent. I tend to agree that it is correct.

I believe you, perhaps even more than 97 percent. We had unconditional
love from my father and that saved us.

I agree that all families are dysfunctional, and some are more so than others. Maybe someday I will come across a fictional character who reminds me of my mother - that'd really be something.

There were so many similarities. Both had the depression mentality. The
fictional character rushed to get all the money out of the safe deposit
box when she should have rushed to her husbands aid first. I don't think
that you will ever find a fictional character that bakes 3l loaves of
homemade bread at one fell swoop.
