A Dog's Life

It is exhausting to take in a second dog but so rewarding.
Jose is a four year old whose parent passed away. He was
being fostered by a friend of mine who brought him by and
said, "Is this one cute enough for you?. He was. I
think he is a Silky/Chihuahua mix.

Rex has been wonderful to him and seems to be protective.
He comes and gets me when Jose needs attention. However,
he jumped in bed with me to check and see if Jose was in
there last night. Jose sleeps in his little bed under the bed which is perfect.

Food is a problem because they each want what the other has. Rex has never, ever eaten dry food until now while
Jose longs for Rex's canned food. Jose even wants to
drink from Rex's water bowl which is way too tall for him,
even though he has a more convenient one. I guess we will
eventually get this sorted out.

Jose's hyper behavior has calmed down. Everywhere I go, I am trailed by the two of them and it is extremely funny to see a huge Rex and a tiny Jose like ducklings. I guess you could say that It is the long and the short of
it.

Hohn, he has a bed that he loves under our bed where he can retire with
out being disturbed. He figured the under the bed part out and when I
put it under our bed, he started sleeping all night in it. He hates
confinement. I followed all instructions and he nearly destroyed the
guest bathroom so I let him figure out what he wanted and it is working.

That's hilarious that they each want each other's food. This little dog has definitely made Rex's life more interesting.

It is good for Rex to have a companion and it is good for me to have
an incentive to walk. Plus we have come to love him in just this short
time.

I'm glad it's working out. I wondered because Rex doesn't like that dog that was Bobby's, does he? So it must be that dog in particular, not all little dogs.

Rex doesn't like to share but he has been surprisingly gracious.

What you might do, is ask one of your grand kids who is techie savvy, to help you post a photo of your doggies. I mean, what are grand kids for?

Good idea. I may be able to post on facebook. I will try.

so happy things are going well. Do you feed them in separate rooms? I wish you could post pictures!!!!

I have yet to come to a good feeding program since Rex likes to eat a
little all day long. I guess I will start feeding them both dry food in
the mini kibble size.

Jose has really calmed down. He has developed the notion that he needs
to be under a chair or a bed to stay out of the way of the giants and still be part of the family when we are working. It is working way
better than I thought it would. Buster probably likes being an only child. I am glad he is laid back, a relaxed dog is easier to live with.

Does Jose have a crate he can call home?

I had Benny for two or three years before we got Buster to keep Benny company when we went out. Benny had developed textbook separation anxiety when we moved. We spent months going between here and the motel until it sold and I think that was too confusing for Benny. Anyway, they did a lot of the same behaviors you're talking about, but it's really interesting how Buster's behavior changed when he became the only dog last year. He sleeps as late as he wants and eats when he want; no competition or challenges. He seems to be fine. He comes in here and lays on the rug for awhile than goes to his bed in the kitchen. Very relaxed.
