Yesterday, Ted and I decided that we needed a day out and
we began it by going out to breakfast at Jimmy's Egg, a
local diner. I had pancakes which seemed to just keep
multiplying so that it was kind of a no win situation.
Ted had a Belgian waffle that kept doing the same thing.
We came back home to get sunglasses and spied a garage
sale up the street and bought several items. We finally
decided to go to Guthrie, a little town thirty miles
away, famous for being Oklahoma's territorial capitol.
It was too early for the antique shops to be open, so
we set out on a quest to find the farmhouse where Ted
and his family had spent a year in the sixties. When we
located it, we noticed that they had wood for sale, which
gave us a legitimate reason for stopping. We needed wood
for the fireplace and had not purchased it yet. We visited
for a time and the farmer's son agreed to deliver and stack
it later in the day.
On the way back to seek out antique shops, we stopped at
another garage sale and this old woman was trying to sell
an art deco dresser for 35.00. I told her it was worth
far more and that she needed to mark it up to at least
one hundred dollars. It had a huge etched mirror on it
and although art deco and mid century are my least favorite periods, I could not bear to see her give it
away when her need was obvious.
Finally, we got back to the antique shop row and did a
little shopping. The first one had only musical instruments but an entertaining fiddler who was hawking
his book and playing his guitar. The next one had only
horse and western memorabilia but with the third one,
we hit pay dirt. It was a huge store, crammed with
interesting furniture and items. I fell in love with an
art noveau piece and could hardly wait to get it home.
We had no sooner gotten home than Ellie and the girls
came in and told me O.U. had offered Adrienne a 46,000
scholarship. It won't be enough but it is a start.
Then, the boys called and were ready to deliver wood.
They were nice kids and did an excellent job. A power
out holds no terror for us now.
We had dinner at a new Mexican restaurant but it was not
relaxing. The noise was so bad that we won't eat there
again, although the food and service were excellent.
All in all, it was a very good day.
