This and That

We are having a dust storm which stretches from just past
Amarillo Texas through the Oklahoma Panhandle into Kansas,
Nebraska and Iowa. It is not unexpected because of the
drought but so regrettable. We haven't gotten the dust
but I can smell it in the air. The landscape from West
Texas through Oklahoma's panhandle is so flat and uninteresting. We used to drive that way when we went to
Santa Fe and dreaded that stretch of road.

The wind is howling outside and I can hear the neighbors
yard furniture being blown around. The weather has been
so strange this year. Anyone with foresight knew that this
dust would start blowing if we didn't get rain.

On another note, I heard from Susil today. I know it must
have been painful for her to write because one hand is
bandaged and her right hand is numb. She was in
Rehab for two weeks and they are getting her a power wheel
chair. They also prescribed Paxil for depression. She
had physical therapy while she was there.

we are doing well. Ted had the stimulator inserted on
Monday and although the wound is sore, his back isn't
bothering him so it is giving us hope that we will be
able to get out more. The operation took about two hours.
He was entirely too alert afterward and begged to drive and
then critiqued my driving all the way home.

I have been cooking and baking and making candy. Laura
posted the date ball recipe which is my favorite and so
easy to do. I may not share that one with my kids. I
dipped pretzels in white chocolate and made more fudge and
peppermint brittle. I have a lot in Christmas tins to give
to Linda and Sara. Bobby and his family are already
enjoying theirs.

I will post again before Christmas but I am wishing you
all the joys of the holiday season.

It would be fun if we could visit in person.

I remember when I drove west on I-40 a couple of years ago to Ok. City, there were about 6 or 8 junk cars stuck vertically into the ground just south of the highway, very artistically done and a real eyecatcher. I'm guessing it may have been near Shamrock, Tex 'cause it was near the border b/t the states.

There is also a Cadillac collector with junk Cadillacs in his yard in Texas.
It is interesting but my favorite will always be the pink Caddy convertible
with the tale fins.

Hope Ted continues to improve. As for the kvetching (New York term) about your driving, t'war ever thus. To further give myself experience, I could persuade Ed to let me drive now and then but I don't because I dread his panic. I do fine when it is just me and the car. He is rarely a passenger so he can't judge the margins from the other seat and thinks I am running off the road when I am in the middle. It's maddening.

Oh, how right you are! That was the worst thing about the whole day. I
am so glad it is now behind us.

Dust storm at Christmas. Hope it's not too bad. I remember a dust storm from my childhood. It stung my legs and sandblasted the house.

The dust storm may not make it here but if we don't get some rain it is
going to impact food prices, property values and our lakes and rivers.

I'm so sorry to hear about that dust storm, wait until March blows in like a lion, it'll be worse. We had dust storms in the 1950s around Christmas time at my home in Colorado. It was so deep on the windowsills it was cascading off, and we raked it into furrows on the front lawn.

I know that March will be awful. The farmers will be plowing up the dirt
and it is going to blow away all the top soil.

can remmeber reading about a drought in Kansas back in the 1930s ? where people commited suicide and a farmer killing his family . Our last drought that ended after 7 years did cause a couple of suicides here . once in a northern town i lived in it was black in the middle of the day and later it rained mud .
Glad to hear your keeping well and teds back is feeling better, it will do you both good to get out more. You are a busy girl with all that cooking and baking , the mince pie episode here was enough for my CATH

It is really tragic when those things happen. We are going to a friends for
Mexican food tomorrow night. That will be a nice change. I truly enjoy
cooking.
