Yard Work

I haven't walked at night for 3 days but plan to tonight. It's too easy to fall out of a good habit. No rain, at least.

While others have been growing plants, I was busy killing them. Yesterday I finally tackled the foot-high weeds I'd been ignoring in the side yard. These I snipped and ripped out by hand and stuffed into many garbage bags. I alternated doing this (kneeling and stooping) with standing and chopping limbs off the monster flowering bush that grows around 3 feet each summer. I've now got that bush down to a manageable size for the winter, but still have more weeds to eliminate before I can put plastic & mulch down. There are 2 rock walls and one of them I have to really work on to get all the vines off, using scissors sometimes, so the rocks don't get pushed by the growth and start coming loose again.

And I'll need to put down some of that powdered poison that kills japanese beetle grubs. The last couple of years, they've eaten the flowering bush, the rosebush and all other leafy plants to rags. The stink bugs do a lot of it too.

A lot of work, but it's only keeping back the chaos. My yard looks kind of awful now since everything's drying out and grass is turning brown. Even so, it's gratifying to see a couple of areas brought under control. Today my shoulders, neck, back and knees ache mightily.

It has been so dry in Colorado, we are hoping to get some moisture in October/November. I plan to use Roundup on some thistle areas, and since the ground can be planted immediately after using it, will seed in some native grass and hope the winter is wet enough for it to germinate.

Really? Plant right after roundup? That would be good. I have weeds to kill, still, in spots where I need to put grass seed. I hope you get some rain to speak of. I remember the difficulty my sister had when she lived there. And you're not even allowed to collect the runoff from rains.

I like the wilderness part -- it's the religious fanatics and gun-totin' tattooed wonders worshipping the Confederate banner that have me spooked. I can deal with a palmetto bug (fancy name for HUGE cockroach).

You are a braver woman than me. I scream when I see those.

I was tired when I saw the word 'work' and now after reading what you did I have to take a nap--exhausting!!

Yard work is hard on the body but good for the soul. I need to do some
transplanting and am going to try the vinegar and salt solution on the
weeds. I dread the mulching that I need to do. It makes you so itchy.

My liquid weedkiller worked well to keep sprouts out of the driveway cracks and wall beside it, but not so much on other areas. My cement steps can look like they're growing hair, sometimes.

I did weeding and planted stuff when we first got to Florida with a house and grounds. But it is very had work and last time I trimmed the bougainvillea I got really sick. I get so discouraged when bugs kill plants I have tended. Good luck with your efforts.

Isn't Florida still wilderness, really? Wild bugs 5 feet long, and all. I wouldn't be equal to it either.
