Surgery

My sister’s husband had hip replacement surgery this morning, and is home already. He’s trying to walk around, saying it doesn’t hurt, but I hope he takes it as slowly as he’s supposed to. My sister says he has a high pain tolerance and he kept wanting to walk the entire corridor to go to the hospital parking lot.

She took him to the hospital before 5am, and had to stay there all day, since it was likely he’d be sent home, so I went over to take care of her dog and let him outside. Besides bringing over some cabbage rolls and salad so she wouldn’t have to prepare anything, I did some cleaning in the kitchen. It felt good to be useful to this sister who’s so thoughtful of everyone in the family. Funny how it’s easy to clean someone else’s kitchen but a pain to do my own. Well, actually kitchens aren’t bad. It’s scrubbing the shower that I hate.

Now I was going to find a wellness journal for him so he can write down his physical progress — we think doing this might keep him from doing actually too much too fast. Which reminds me, I’ve got to go out to walk. I hope the skunk I kept seeing previous nights keeps his distance.

It's probably good that he wants to do more and not less. They say that PT is very important after replacements so his cooperation in that area will tell the tail!

I guess it's like you have to do just the right amount of exercise: enough to keep your body functioning but not so much you disturb the healing bits. The whole idea that they can replace a major joint is incredible, and I keep imagining metal connectors and axle grease.

It is strange that it is easier to clean a friend or relative's house
than one's own. I hope you can slow him down. I think rehab would
have been a good option.

He's much younger and was an athlete, so they decided hospitalization wasn't for him. But immediate and continuing physical therapy, yes. They start a day or 2 afterwards. Since this hospital (AGH) is a top one for rehab and other reconstructive surgery, even in a hospital destination like Pittsburgh, I guess he's in good hands. No to mention that his wife is a nurse with eagle eyes.

Living in a senior citizen's environment--300 of us over 70--isn't he in rehab??? Everyone here who has had hip surgery spend at least a week to 10 days in rehab before going home--some, if showing remarkable progress, can go home sooner.

That reminds me of when the cat has surgery, and the vet says 'keep her quiet and don't let her walk around until the drugs wear off' and all the cat wants to do is explore the house in case new rooms were built on while she was gone for a few hours.

Scratch and Sniff, my two kitties I got in the late nineties had to get fixed. When I got them home they weren't going anywhere, couldn't even jump onto the bed. I settled them on the bed in a box lined with towels. They slept. I do miss them.

How would you keep a cat from walking if it wants to? Turn the TV to the all-fish-&-mouse channel or something? and even then the cat might jump at the screen, so, no.
