Nocturnal Animals.

I started my almost-nightly walk around my block and suddenly decided to go to the middle school’s track tonight. I was going to try jogging, and needed an absolutely flat surface. When I got there, three deer were eating grass in the middle. No antlers among them; they looked like whitetail deer. (Also a big group of birds were apparently sleeping in the grass. They took off when I arrived.) One deer ran away immediately, but the other two didn’t seem to know what to make of me, so I walked closer, stopped and let them stare and they kept eating grass; then I walked closer and closer since the track circle led their direction. They let me walk very near, and past them, and didn’t move

I found I could actually jog for short distances — my knees are improving. Deer kind of scare me since my encounter with an angry one at the cemetery once. On my next lap I decided the deer should leave, so I tried to scare them through the gate, but they didn’t seem to know where it was.

So I ran through it, to show them, then came back to the track. They were still just staring, standing there looking stupid. I walked past them and continued my lap around. Finally they had found the exit when I circled back around.

Unfortunately, the school turns the lights off about 11:15 so I didn’t want to stay, especially since a man without a shirt arrived in a car, evidently to do laps too. I do not walk in the dark with shirtless weird men. I told him it was all his, and got in my car to go home, and finished my walk circling my block about 6 more times.

Comments:

I don't set foot outside after dark. I don't even like the cat going out at night.

I'd put some acorns out for you, but you seem carnivorous. What's up with that?

I fed tame deer in England once. I didn't know they could be aggressive. The ones you saw were apparently not a real threat.

Sometimes I think about putting a salt lick in my yard. I'm guessing the three deer were a family of mother and youngsters. That would account for the two who stayed there on the track looking like they didn't know what to do. The third (who'd run away as soon as I showed up) stood outside the fence watching them until they left too to join her.

Along the Interstates out in the wide open spaces of places like Wyoming and Utah, there are fences and every so often zig-zag type openings or other structures that look like they are meant to facilitate the movement of wildlife. I've always wondered who is going to teach the wildlife how to use them. It could be that they come to the fence and run along it until the gate sucks them in and turns them to cross through the fence and go on their way.

I've heard of those but never got to drive past any. I think I have heard that animals do learn to use them, and it saves a lot of accidents.

I am glad you chose to stay safe and went back to your neighborhood to
complete your walk. Those deer sound almost tame, I'll best they are
used to people coming out to jog.

It was surprising when the lights went out. They never did that at the high school track, but I think I will check.
