Last night I made the mistake of watching a little more of a Netflix show called The Mist. I’m through with it now, because there was something really diseased about its female characterization. In most horror movie the characters show such poor judgement that you’re yelling at the TV, but usually it’s laughable, and at some point they wise up and save themselves. But in this, something about the characters’ unspeakable judgement, religiousness, and attitudes towards females (by the females themselves, as well) was just… deformed. I’m not interested in seeing any of these actors in anything else.
The show is supposedly based on a novella of Stephen King’s and I kept watching, hoping to see something resembling the original. No, the writing seems entirely new. The original story was a scary thing about an unnatural weather event, probably caused by Army experiments, with all sorts of monsters appearing to kill the humans, who are trapped in a grocery store.
But from the first episode on, 3 or so plot lines all involving rough sex and/or rape were the focus. Yes — it was a Harvey Weinstein production. You could have guessed.
