Let Them Eat Hay

I saw this on Craigslist in the Volunteers section.

"With the snow, high rivers and single digit temperatures, this winter in Pittsburgh has been especially hard on the homeless. Volunteers are need to help our church distribute bales of hay to some of the more popular areas where the homeless tend to camp out, along the river, under bridges, etc. Hay is a great insulator and makes for warm soft bedding, just ask any horse and is still a popular choice for bedding in the third world! Need people with pickup trucks and strong backs to help."

The temperature here, with the wind chill figured in, has gone to ten below zero some nights.

...just ask any horse

hay is okay, but more should be done. It is a crime that the richest country in the world is not caring for its homeless.

Where it can get to sub-zero temps out here in the west, I've never heard mention of distributing livestock bedding materials to the homeless people, but it makes sense. If nothing else they could use the bales as windbreaks. But it really does smack of our society saying 'let them cake.'

The ad didn't say where the church was, and if it was out in the country this might be a practical thing. But if that church was anywhere in town, they have no excuse not to be opening a shelter instead. Just seeing this ad made me think I was in a novel. Probably by Dickens.

I guess heartlessness has made us a third world country. How about extra blankets and warm clothing and food for starters. You have inspired me to call the Salvation Army with a donation of coats and clothing today.

I know what you mean, reading it made me start getting a basket for Operation Safety Net here.
