Downtown

The actual view from one side of my sister's place. The buildings were so close. These aluminum-looking buildings are Gateway Center Nos. 2 and 4, I think.

I thought I had some of the river view, but it's not in my phone. I think it was because I was having trouble walking close enough to her front window, which is scary to anyone with a fear of heights. I was too conscious of having only a couple of inches of building between me and the outside, and I'd surely fall and smash through and plummet the 2 dozen or so floors to the ground. You know how the mind works, if you have this phobia. It doesn't always affect me the same way; sometimes I actually enjoy the height.

Suffice to say I could not, would not, live in a high-rise or skyscraper. The elevators are a fear thing too.

I went to Pittsburgh with a boyfriend in 1951. His parents lived at 2647 S. 18th St. and how's that for a memory. I sense there have been great changes since those days. The boyfriend didn't work out, which, actually, was a good thing.

excuse my ignorance, but downtown where? I grew up in Chicago, lived a good many years in NYC, loved every minute of big city living, miss it like crazy. Enjoy the beauty of my little Florida island and the wildlife, but I want intellect, not just from a few friends but from the waiter, the guy who sweeps, etc.

Pittsburgh. The city is struggling, can’t keep any retail shopping there for instance, but there are wonderful places to go for art, music, drama, science centers, history. I can’t attest to the quality of the waiters and sweepers, though. Certainly not the same dynamics as NYC. But at least the rich people talk about more than their material possessions — which was my impression of what wealthy people do in Los Angeles.

Welcome to the concrete jungle---growing up in NYC you get use to it!

It makes me think of Rear Window. All the people pay for the city view, so seldom close their curtains.

It does look a little stark. I like green grass and flowers and can hardly wait until we get some pansies to put out.

This is the steel view near the Market Square area, I guess. Soon the cliffs above the river will be completely green, and I'll have to remember to get some good photos of that.

The view is a bit surreal - no vegetation, no sign of people - makes me think Superman is going to come flying around one of those buildings.

This view is definitely stark. I liked it for that reason but not sure how it is to wake up to that every day out your bedroom window.

My dad flew a small plane, and I was fine flying at about 500 ft above ground until we came upon those very tall radio towers. That 'connected' me to the ground, made me realize we were up high, and then I got the light-headed, pit of the stomach symptoms.

I get what you mean about connecting to the ground. Some things that help with perspective are horrifying.
