Debts and 8-foot Bears

Suburban neighborhoods give themselves leave to put up the silliest decorations, which is amusing and sometimes very pretty. A house a couple of doors down has a massive 8-foot teddy bear sitting on the lawn, with some mice and tiny snowmen singing to him from sheet music. A 6-foot Santa hovers on the side, and illuminated candy canes form a fence at the edge of the lawn. Another house had a complex light system that changes colors every few minutes on the roof and front of the house, and one side of the house looks like a kaleidoscope. That was pretty.

Last night a bunch of outdoor lights were turned off, for some reason. I hope they're back on tonight, because it was sad to see that 8-foot teddy bear and Santa deflated and lying in plastic puddles on the lawn.

Otherwise, what a mixed bag things have been lately. Just got a sale started on a domain I forgot I had — but the price stated is lower than I meant it to be — but we might have a 2nd sale to the same buyer. Then an old debt was suddenly called in, swallowing up a huge amount I thought I could use for current expenses. Ouch. And lastly, I remembered a gift card a relative gave me to the grocery store, and it was more generous than usual birthday gifts. What good timing for that.

At least I don't have Korean parasites and no one shot at me. So I can't complain when I think about that man. That news story made me so happy to hear he's recovering faster than they believed he would, and companies are giving him lifetime chocolate pies and things.

Nicholas Kristof in the NYTimes just posted a column about charities, and if I find a few dollars I might send it to EvidenceAction.org, where they have a Deworm The World initiative. They can deworm a child for 50 cents for an entire year, which is pretty incredible.

I love the Christmas lights and some neighbors and I are trying to organize a city wide light tour with friends. Ted is no longer able to string them up, so our house is dark. Inflatables don't stay up in our strong winds.

I can imagine the wind! Here, the rain is making a mess of some yards. I'm sorry you won't have many 8-foot bears standing around. Only lights..

Hm, I don't mean civilian. I mean anyone who isn't high in the government.

The North Korean young soldier in the news, who was shot multiple times running for the border, and when he fell, South Korean guards crawled forward and dragged him to safety on their side. In the hospital, the fact that he was malnourished and parasite-ridden made his recovery that much harder. I wish all civilian North Koreans could escape.

There's one crossways here where all the houses are elaborately decorated, a festival of lights, and you are surrounded by the spectacle of it. I love to go by there after dark. The rest of the island is a decorated house here and there, but this little area is really great. We don't decorate. Ed isn't into it and I can't do it on my own. :( Anyway, have a lovely time this season and bless you all.

My house is nice and dark on the outside. The neighborhood can handle the light show work.

We really enjoy seeing the lights displays that people come up with. The yards here in Las Vegas are tiny, some of them the size the area covered by 2 parked cars, but families still try to cram as many of those inflatables into them as possible. A couple years ago one of the homeowners set up a light show choreographed to music that was broadcast over a dedicated radio station - park across the street and tune up the radio station. He was in a fairly unbuilt area - plenty of room for cars to park without disturbing neighbors.

That's going an extra mile, putting up yard decorations in the city that kind of is a holiday decoration itself. I like the radio +light setup idea.
