Yikes! Snakes!

Going out on the back porch last night to let the dogs out, I caught a snake scurrying away from me. Megan immediately chased after it, and fearful that it could be poisonous and bite her, I quickly grabbed my shoe and swatted it. Once I knew it was dead, I put it in a jar and this morning I photographed it trying to figure out what kind it was. It looks like it is either a cottonmouth which is venomous, or a Florida brown snake- which is not. Cottonmouths usually stay close to water and there is a ditch/creek directly behind my house, but the rains lately have brought out all kinds of critters.

So far, I have found several snakes on my property. There is the one that scared the mailman, a pygmy rattler by the garage door, the corn snake who took refuge inside my grill, and an assortment of other snakes, mostly garters. If I see the bands running the length of the snake typical of garters, I usually recover quickly after the initial start. It is when I immediately recognize it as dangerous- like the rattler, or when I don't know what it is that I get a bit freaked out.

I thought it might be a copperhead too. We all are plagued where ever we
live with snakes, insects and rodents. I stopped up my mouse hole with
a brillo pad and I haven't seen any signs lately.

Geez, I hate reading about killing snakes, or Red's comment. These are the same people that chastize me for killing a raccoon. Grr.

Snakes don't have those cute bandit faces.

Well, if they knew what I did to make sure it was dead they would likely take up a petition against me.

I have to keep reminding myself that the garter snakes are our friends because they eat insects in the garden, but I don't like seeing them. If only they had legs, I'd be all right.

As long as I immediately recognize it as a garter snake, I am less scared.

I HATE snakes. In my opinion, the only good snake is a DEAD one.

Garter snakes startle me, but everything else that I do not immediately recognize just scare the **** out of me!

Well, I picked it up with a "Grabber" because I did not want to go near it once I smacked it over the head.

Ahhh, the joys of life in Florida! I've never been afraid of snakes, and early on I learned the basic visual differences in head shape (oval okay/triangular venomous) and eye shape (round okay/elliptical venomous) and to look for the presence of pits behind the nostrils (venomous). Very helpful as a hiker and golfer to know the difference.

Copperheads are venomous! Shudder!!!! Maybe a rat snake? At any rate, it is a dead snake now.
