My Turn to Experiment

image

This is the same boat ramp as the last image I posted. (Assuming I did it right with the new image uploader.) I stopped to take the photos on my way to our conference because the sky was so spectacular.

Lately I have spent a lot of time thinking about morality, civility, common decency, and how our social mores have changed. I believe it is because we have lost respect for ourselves and for others. Many of you over 60 will understand- maybe not agree, but understand. Many of you under 60 will not get it.

The world I grew up in would never have a Maury show where girls would get on national TV and admit they had been sleeping around let alone not know who fathered their children. (We had "Queen for a Day", but these women were desperately poor, not immoral.) Public cursing and public indecency were NOT OK. Obnoxious behavior was not a right, and deliberately insulting others was not accepted. We make movies about children behaving like complete brats and call it comedy. We make movies about adults behaving boorishly and applaud. I am downright disgusted.

Ok, let me get down off my soapbox.I'm done.

I'm with you on that. And it's become a whole cultural thing. It's sad.

I can definitely agree that society seems to be going downhill. I really think the movie Idocracy is predicting the future. Scary.

What ever happened to manners and civility?

Hear, hear. We agree.

A world of obnoxious types- and far too many of them seem to be members of my family.

I definitely agree, Dottie, there is no value placed on decency any more. In fact, I think rudeness and greed are rewarded more than civility and respect for others. I put a lot of the blame on television. It brings rude, immoral behavior into our homes every night in the guise of comedy, and most of these shows have laugh tracks and some are animated to indicate that it's all to be taken lightly. In our time zone, prime time starts at 7 pm, so there's plenty of time for the kiddies to take it all in. With regard to their parents, I blame our generation for raising their now thirty-something children with a 'no rules' outlook. I suppose it was an overreaction to what they considered their own parents' rigidity and strictness.

You didn't rant nearly enough. There was a time when people were courteous
and pleasant. You have only to watch those pageant shows where they push
children to the limit and the mothers want to kill each other. We have
drive by shooting and mass murders. Children shout obscenities in the
schools and gently reared children accept and pick up the behavior and
the language. Movies and tv are to blame for a lot of the under age
sex and now illegitimate children are considered the norm, never mind that
a responsible father is needed. oops, you should not have got me
started.

Just relieved to see that I am not the only one who thinks something is wrong with how we conduct ourselves as a society.
