Tales of Two Florida Fourteen Year-old Boys.

I am sure by now everybody has heard about Trayvon Martin, the fourteen year-old boy shot and killed by a member of a neighborhood watch association in Sanford, Florida. The boy was simply walking home form the corner store with an ice tea and a bag of Skittles when Zimmerman (a member of the neighborhood crime watch) confronted and killed him. The boy (Trayvon) was on the phone with his girlfriend who heard the confrontation and the gunshot. Zimmerman had called 911, was asked to STOP following the boy, pursued him anyway, and was heard and recorded by 911 calling Trayvon a "Nigger" before he shot the unarmed 14-year old. Zimmerman claimed it was self-defense. He said the 14 year old attacked him, so he has NOT been arrested. The entire state is up in arms. The FBI has stepped in and the governor has been asked to appoint a special prosecutor...and Zimmerman still has not been arrested.

Then there is Corey Lee Sutton, the 14 year-old Lakeland boy who raped and brutally beat a woman at a Florida hotel. He has been charged with sexual battery, attempted second degree murder, and robbery, among other things. The victim, an employee of the hotel, was waiting in a smoking area for her friend to get of work. Sutton saw her and intended to rob her, but "got carried away". From robbery to attempted murder and rape? Just what wires got crossed in his brain? He became aroused by beating a woman nearly to death?

What kind of country is this that a boy cannot safely walk home from a store or a woman cannot wait outside a hotel for her friend to get off work?

Neighborhood watch programs should never evolve into vigilante "justice". This troubles and scares me greatly. Be safe.

They scare me too. I hope they kick him out of the Neighborhood crime watch group no matter how this turns out.

We have home invasions in our city, with tragic consequences. A number of
teens have been shot by home owners as they forced their way in the house.
There is an open carry law in the legislature right now. It is getting to be
like the old west. Trayvon was a good boy and I hope Mr. Zimmerman is charged with murder, as for the other teen, as far as I am concerned he should be tried as an adult.

Turns out Trayvon is 17, not 14. There is such an public outcry in Florida. The city council in the town that they live in issued a no-confidence vote and asked the police chief to resign. Zimmerman and Sutton should be tossed in the same cell.

We've had crimes similar to the second one here in Las Vegas committed by under 20 year-olds. It is as if the teenagers are missing any shred of humanity.

Neither Zimmerman nor Sutton seem to have any respect for life or the rights of others.

Florida has a notorious conceal and carry law. It is a damned shame how much power the gun lobby has. The perpetrator will be arrested and charged with the crime. He had no business having a gun on him as a volunteer 'security' guard anyway. If the locals and Florida don't charge him the Feds will.

Yes, our right to carry guns and the right to defend oneself against attack applies even when the person defending themselves is the aggressor.

I am surprised that he had a weapon there.Did anyone else have one?
He is guilty and no excuse for this horrible tragedy.
Such a nice looking boy to be robbed by this monster.
Today, generation are so much different than ours and will get worse in the near future.
We have bully, school killing etc. What is all of this?

Both are horrible. Zimmerman should be arrested, and it amazes me that neighborhood watch volunteers are allowed to be armed. They are supposed to watch and report. They are not police. He went way too far and should be charged. The phone tape is appalling. He is an adult and is liable.

The 14-year-old Sutton needs very serious long-term intervention with juvenile detention, and there are probably many troubling issues involved in his situation. But he can't be held to an adult standard. I pray his victim recovers from such awful physical and psychological trauma.

Neighborhood watch are NOT permitted to be armed but Zimmerman held a concealed gun permit apart from his neighborhood crime watch duties- and why he was not immediately arrested.
Sutton should be held to an adult standard. At the age of fourteen, he already has an extensive record. This was a particularly bloody and gruesome event. AFTER he beat her nearly to death he decided to rape her? That is not just someone who lacks empathy, but someone who lacks any shred of humanity as well.
