Brrr ...

Temperatures in the Bay Area plunged last night and will go down again tonight. Farmers protect strawberries and other crops by misting them with water. When the water mist freezes, it forms a case around the leaves that insulate them against further dropping temperatures. Trouble is, farmers are depleting the aquifers, which cause sinkholes throughout the state, and we have an alarming number of new sinkholes. Just last week, two tourists parked at a rest stop on I4 to use the facilities, and while they were inside relieving their bladders, a sinkhole opened up in the parking lot swallowing both cars. There are ways to keep crops from freezing that do not require water, but the installation/conversion to other methods is expensive, so farmers are not required to convert. Florida protects its farmers. One is NOT allowed to publish disparaging comments about farmers and their methods in Florida without facing heavy fines and penalties. Even law enforcement and the EPA etc., have to tread softly when dealing with farmers in our state. The industry is protected- big time.

That's cold for your area. Hope the temperature goes back up in a hurry. The sinkhole issue will have to be addressed sooner or later.

Very cold- temperatures are climbing back up again today- thank goodness!

My strawberries freeze all the time. But then again, they're in the freezer!

There are a lot of consequences to this kind of cold. I'll bet houses aren't
built with enough insulation in a warm climate and the poor animals and
birds are in trouble.

Yes, especially animals like manatees that are experiencing record deaths due to cold.

Maybe a strawberry field will get sucked into a sinkhole.

Unfortunately, sinkholes appear at the edges of the depleted aquifers- usually miles away and right under people's houses.

Yikes, and I agree that other methods should be put in place to protect the aquifers. This is where the state and federal support must play a role.

They are too busy protecting farmers to take any action.

Wow! You are just about where we are for temperatures!
comment by trekbrarian on Jan 4, 2012 3:57 PM ()
And- our humidity is so much higher that sometimes temperature drops like this feel even colder than they do up north. Imagine sticking your hand in 29 degree water vs. walking in 29 deg. air.

Martin says back in the seventies tomorrow and flip flop, shorts etc.

Temperatures are climbing today, but Martin is further south. We are back in the 60's.

Darn! Image was cut off again, but you can see that temperatures in Brandon dropped to 26.
