Flooding & Dummies

An acre of more of my property is under water from the melting of all the snow we got this winter. It's as bad as it has ever gotten. Two neighbours adjoining my place have put down fill, which has made my water problem worse. The property slopes down slightly from the front to back. There's a big puddle at the front, and LOTS of water at the back.

I have to keep asking DH to do something about the sump pump. He runs it a few times, then ignores it again. After learning the next door neighbour basement started flooding, I just went and set up the sump pump and left it on.

I ask DH if he is planning to start pumping the water. Sure, sure, he says. I go to work, with the understanding that he is going to pump. I get home, and nope, didn't pump.

He did start digging a trench from the back water to the front water so that the back water will flow up to the front water and make it easier to pump out.

Do you see a problem with the above?

Up?

He thinks that a deep enough trench will make water flow up hill.

And he's digging this by hand, and it would need to be 100+ feet long or so. Yeah right. If he actually manages to dig the whole trench, the water at the front will all drain to the back.

The next night (tonight), he doesn't pump. And he doesn't dig his trench. It's going to snow tonight and make things worse.

Crap. I hate spring. Really, spring just isn't fun around here. I like summer and fall, then winter. Spring is just nasty. Too much water, too much mud, too much work, too much manure collected over the winter to clean up, too much cat poop appearing from under the snow...

And we only got up to 92 degrees today and again no rain--I hate to say we need it with hurricane season coming up but we do need rain!
