Field of Nightmares

This is a "field ant" nest, although the photo doesn't do it justice. They have infested my yard since last year and I can't get rid of them. I've got some nests that are 8 feet wide; there's at least 5 all together.

The stuff I've read says their nests only get to 2 feet wide. They must really like my yard! It looks like they bring up sand and stuff from the nether worlds and pile it all on top of the grass. Again the scientists say this ain't so. Where does it come from then?

They must have lots of tunnels under the sand because the ground is nearly hollow underneath the sand. You don't want to step in one of the hollow spots - the little buggers bite.

It's war!

Maybe it was the long cold wet Spring or maybe I did a great extermination job last year but (know on wood) so far, we haven't been invaded by the annual hordes of ants.

Have you called your county extension agent? Maybe they can help....

Malathion? I kept two full bottles of Diazonon when the Fed banned it. Should I send you a bottle?

I'll see what the extension service says and if the new chemical works. It says it's for field ants, so maybe. Keep your fingers crossed. Otherwise I'll call you...

We've had fire ant mounds and you really don't want to step in those. Ed sprays them with a special whatever he gets at Home Depot. Google "field ants control" and you will get info on how to get rid of them. Good luck. Never had these problems in NYC.

I did a search and didn't come up with much. I bought some new thing at the store last night and I will try that when I can get home again. Still at mom's so the ants have even more time to infest the yard.
