Beyond the Call

My mom spent last weekend in the hospital after she couldn't get up off the floor. They never did come up with a diagnosis. Scary!

On Sunday, I brought Saturday's mail, including an announcement that her step-granddaughter was graduating from Medical School. Very cool!

I realized it was missing a few minutes after someone picked up her breakfast tray. An aide helped me look for it, but the tray wasn't in the unit. She made a call. 30 minutes later, she brought it in. Someone in the kitchen had searched the trays and found it before it got tossed into the garbage.

Now that was above the call of duty. Really cool!

Following on your comment about the treadmill. She is reluctant to exercise and invents reasons to not do it, like "knowing" she has a treadmill. So go ahead and get one and say, hey, I found your treadmill and set it up. It's the only way. Yesterday Ed and I took a developmentally disabled 61-year-old man for whom he is a guardian advocate, back to a locked behavior center because he is in danger of committing suicide. The orderly and I chatted while he was being admitted. He said to the guy, who has been there before, "Hey Wayne, you didn't bring any clothes." And to me, he said, he thinks he can stay in bed all day if he doesn't have clothes. "We'll bring some," Ed said. Compromised they may be, but they know how to get their way.

I thought so too. Good people at that hospital, I was very happy with all of them.

Her muscles are weakening. She needs exercise to keep them strong if it is nothing more than a walk around the block.

See my reply to Teal. She won't walk on the sidewalk or in the house - only on a treadmill. She didn't fall - she just got very weak from dehydration due to an illness.

Hi Cat, sorry you had a scare. If you are not moving a lot as you age, your muscles stop responding. Try to get her to move more -- like a slow walk, anything, that will prevent total weakening of her body.

She won't walk anyplace but on a treadmill and we don't have one. The sidewalk is too hard and it would ruin the floors to do it in the house. When I suggest we go to the gym, she won't go. Tonight I suggested that we get a treadmill, but she "knows" that she has one. Maybe I'll just buy one and tell her I found it in the basement. I think I can't get one for about the same price as the gym membership.
