What's in There: the Back Garage

While I'm thinking about it, I'll share some photos of the back garage.

It's a sturdy two-car garage, built sometime around 1914.

A person could spend hours browsing through all these treasures.

The padlock collection. So handy when we need to secure something.

image

My dad saved all these pen tops. I took this picture and threw them away.

image

Loose keys. None of these goes with the padlocks.

My dad collected farm toys and scale cars. We don't have them any more - sold them all at auction so my sister could have her inheritance.

Our garage is full of stuff moved down from New York and never unpacked. Furniture too. Our attic is full of monogrammed linens from someone's first marriage (Ed's late wife's first husband's first wife). I won't use them. They are probably rotting since the crawl space is not air-controlled. Bugs too. Also a box of what I loaded and put up there labeled "Totally useless kitchen stuff" because Ed loves to buy kitchen stuff with 24 parts, French made, that are a nightmare to use and clean. Also, I am not giving parties for 64 of our dearest friends, so I am not looking for stuff that will create snacks for a crowd. Let whoever comes after sort it all out.

I'm still unpacking boxes that I stored in the outbuildings in 2005 when we moved here. There was already plenty of stuff already in the houses, so I'm donating a lot of the box stuff to charity since I've lived without it all this time.

That is quite an eclectic collection of stuff!

Very eclectic! When I run out of other things to do, I go around and gather all the tape measures (for example) and put them in one place. Another project is where I figure out things that I seldom use and move them from the house to the outbuildings; it never ends.

I see a corker or bottle capper up there!

Good eye! I think there is a box of the caps, too.

I have been in your back garage and it is a treasure trove. I remember the
Victorian furniture.

Some progress has been made to clearing out excess stuff, but to the uninitiated, it is hard to tell.

Time to get rid of everything in the sturdy garage--do you really need all those useless keys? How many of the padlocks will you use in you lifetime--get rid of 'stuff' unless you going to leave it for other people to just throw it out or take it home and clutter thei9r place!!!!!

Since we don't know what those keys go to, we don't want to throw them away until we figure it out. I have discarded the ones that I knew we didn't need any more. I have gone to the padlocks many times when I needed one, so nope, not getting rid of them, either. We're passing the whole kit and kaboodle down to my cousins as-is.

You would enjoy the film "Everything is Illuminated." The protagonist is a collector.
comment by steeve on Mar 4, 2013 1:15 PM ()
I'll look out for that film. I don't think of myself as a collector, I'm a curator of the museum of stuff that has accumulated in these cabins over the last 100 years.

I think it's fun to look at other people's stuff. My folks had a nice collection of antique locks that got stolen, so now we just have padlocks we could use and one or two antique locks.
