Mustn't Touch It

In the middle of Utah, which in some respects is the middle of nowhere, unless you live there, there is an exit sign on I-70: Emery Mussentuchit.

It sounded a bit like a man's name to me, perhaps someone who came from Germany, and I wondered how he rated to earn that big sign. Turns out there is a little town called Emery, and Mussentuchit refers to a geological formation. But it looks like a bastardization of Mustn't Touch It.

Isn't odd that some of the layers are labeled "missing strata?"

This is the Mussentuchit Wash:

Some ancient rock art in the Mussentuchit Wash:

This is outside of St. George, Utah as the sun was coming up.

The religious fanatics who believe the earth was created 6,000 years ago are Luddites, and will one day be accumulations in the same dustbin of history that happily accepted communism, women's bustles and witchcraft trials.

It's hard to imagine how they can believe it, but they most emphatically do. Doesn't bother me, that's their business, as long as they don't get into positions where they rewrite the history books like goes on in Texas.

I really enjoyed the rock art. More pictures please.

We'll see.

There is so much to see driving across Utah, unlike Wyoming, I think it'd be fun to ride across it on horseback, but not in the heat of summer. Or the cold of winter.

In that ancient rock art I see big horn sheep, a UFO and lots of aliens.
comment by nittineedles on Mar 5, 2013 8:10 PM ()
LOTS of aliens. There are similar aliens on rocks near my uncle's peach orchard.

"Missing strata" has been uplifted and eroded away.
comment by jondude on Mar 5, 2013 5:46 PM ()
I googled it, and apparently the religious right has adopted the missing strata as proof for their young earth theories and evolution didn't happen. No comment on that from me.

Beautiful photos. The names are weird.

Even at 75 mph, there's plenty of time to enjoy the scenery and think about the names since it's hundreds of miles across there.

this is an interesting sort.Have no desire to live there but the scenery is wonderful and that is it.

There's no trees to get in the way of the scenery there - you can see for miles and miles. Trees are nice, though, don't get me wrong.

Who in their right mind would live in Utah?! Oh, I forgot...I live there. At least where I live there are actual trees. St. George, of course, is where we go for groceries.

I never get tired of the scenery in Utah.
