Scraping the Bottom of the Barrel

While we're on the subject of TV shows (what, you didn't realize that?) I thought last season's Dancing with the Stars had sunk pretty low with Kate Gosselin, who never acted like she wanted to be there and Buzz Aldrin, who is a nice guy, but wasn't very entertaining.

My favorite old person on that show who couldn't dance was Cloris Leachman a couple of seasons ago, because she made up for it by clowning around, and kept me tuning in every week. The voting audience kept her on there longer than her talent deserved, I'm sure because they agreed with me.

Anyhow, here is the cast for the upcoming season (does it sound like there is a disproportionate number of old folks?) :

"The Brady Bunch" matriarch Florence Henderson
Retired Arizona Cardinals quarterback Kurt Warner
"Jersey Shore" co-star Mike "The Situation" Sorrentino
Bristol Palin
"When a Man Loves a Woman" singer Michael Bolton
comedian-actress Margaret Cho
former Los Angeles Lakers forward Rick Fox
"Dirty Dancing" actress Jennifer Grey
"Baywatch" actor David Hasselhoff
Disney Channel star Kyle Massey
singer-actress Brandy Norwood (usually aka "Brandy")
"The Hills" co-star Audrina Patridge

I haven't heard of a few of these people because I don't watch the various TV shows they are in, and I only watch professional football, not the Lakers. A few seasons back there was a rapper or hip hop girl called L'il Kim who I thought tried really hard and it was a pleasure to watch her, even though she didn't win, so I'm not saying I have to know who they are to appreciate them, I just like to see them put some effort into it. I kind of like Margaret Cho, but it remains to be seen how good a dancer she will be and whether she'll control her potty mouth. I'm sure she will at least appear to because they can edit it out. I like it when she 'does' her mother, hilarious, but we probably won't get much of that.

And then there is Bristol Palin. So we are going to be subjected to cameos of her famous mother mugging for the camera, perhaps some exposure to the baby I guess she had, and I suppose we'll find out if she and Levi Johnson are back together. Maybe she'll surprise us all and be really good.

Here is one of the costumes Marie Osmond wore when she was on Dancing with the Stars. We're always hearing how much weight she has lost, well she'd lost it by the time she wore that dress, it is tiny, maybe a size 3 or less.

I always swear I'm not going to watch them, but toward the season's end, I'm lured into the results. There's nobody that interests me this year.

Some people will do anything for a buck, and some TV shows will do anything to get people to watch.

Ugs Bristol. I never watch the show regularly, but every now and then someone that I want to see dance is on so I tune in for a minute....

Most of the season I'll be in LV where we don't have TIVO, so I'll be missing a lot of it, but like you, I might look in if I hear someone is really outstanding.

Well, I'm not a huge fan, but sometimes I watch. Cloris Leachman was hilarious. The night she lost her wig, I laughed til tears ran down my cheeks.

She brought so much wit and spark to that season of the show.

I would rather watch grass wilt than these so-called "reality" shows. Reality is never where a TV camera is blinking at you. It amazes me how we "entertain" our fantasies. I wouldn't be surprised to see a Coliseum in our future with gladiators killing each other or getting devoured by beasts.

I'm glad you're so high-minded.

I like watching it but seldom do and never will this season if Bristol
Palin the poster child for unwed mothers is going to be on.

Yes, I think they have lost me as a viewer.

I enjoy seeing the amateur dancers improve over the course of the season and the competitiveness of it, but lately they've started people who didn't really want to compete, they just want the media attention.

Seems like some of these people are really O-L-D. Yesterday I was listening to a radio program about taking care of elderly people and they said we all think 'old' is 10 years older than we are at the time; even if they are 95, we don't consider that old.
