Police Scanners

I never thought I would be one of those people who listened to the police scanner all day hoping to hear something interesting, but as long as we are breathing we have the potential to change.

Today I discovered a website called RadioReference.com that provides live feeds of police and rescue radios.

Radio Reference for Larimer County

Here is the official description:

"RadioReference.com is the world's largest radio communications data provider, featuring a complete frequency database, trunked radio system information, and FCC license data. RadioReference is also the largest broadcaster of public safety live audio communications feeds, hosting thousands of live audio broadcasts of Police, Fire, EMS, and other associated communications.

With hundreds of thousands of members, RadioReference provides the most comprehensive collaboration platform for public safety communications professionals and hobbyists.
"

You can probably figure out if your county is covered by this website by clicking around on it.

Now why would I want to be so snoopy, you ask? Mostly it's because up here in the mountains things happen that can affect our safety, and it's good to have as much information as possible in order to make decisions and know which roads are open if we need to evacuate in case of a forest fire, or make a routine trip to the post office.

I didn't realize it, but it was still 'on', so even after I thought I wasn't listening any more, I still was. Finally shut off the speakers on the computer.

I tried Oklahoma City - it was the patrol cars on the freeways in your metro area - very boring, I'll wait for a weather event there.

I think it would be good to know about in the event of a disaster; but I don't think I would be a regular listener.

Definitely better on those special occasions. I did hear about the rescue of a woman hiker at a nearby lake.

I tried it for about an hour, and there were long periods of silence, then a voice would blurt out of the computer - scared me every time.

My area is listed but it says there are "no live feeds". Rats.

Next time I hear sirens up on the highway, I'm going to try tuning in.
