Popcorn and the Friendship Bank

In this warm, dry winter we are grateful and encouraged any time we get any rain, because some of it might make its way east to the Colorado mountains where snow is so sorely needed to provide next summer's water supply for farmers. Even clear over here in Las Vegas, the Colorado River supplies our drinking water.

I am going back to my home in Colorado earlier than ever this year, and cling to the superstitious belief that by being there and wishing really hard, snowy weather will come.

The casinos give away little gifts all the time - cheap cooking pans, lap robes, picture frames, dishes. Sometimes they have something we can really use, like door mats, and today Mr. Troutbend brought home a microwave popcorn popper and good-sized jar of popcorn. Because of last year's drought, the price of popcorn just about doubled, so this is no small thing. Sometimes it's hard to find the kernels in a package in the supermarkets these days because most people buy the kind with the butter and seasoning in the bag, but I like to apply my own flavorings.

We went through a lot of popcorn last summer feeding our goose friend, Quackers. As I watched my supply dwindle, it was as if I was counting off the days before Quackers had to leave us. Our local supermarket had run out of popcorn (due to high demand ahead of the price increase). Then, some cabin renters showed up with part of a large container of popcorn, and I made her give it to me. Now we are friends for life because she has a balance in the Friendship Bank.

The Friendship Bank is a form of Pay it Forward. Any time you say or think "I owe you one," that's the friendship bank, and it's not always about money.

The ground squirrels also enjoyed eating Quackers' lunch.

I love the Friendship Bank concept.

I don't know if my husband understands it or approves of it - it's one of those things we don't discuss. Some day this man is going to die, and I'll have a whole list of things I never asked him. Even after all these years together, I can't predict what he's thinking.

The friendship bank is such a nice concept. It is almost never about
money.

Sometimes it's a way for me to give someone extra money that they wouldn't otherwise accept, but you're right, usually, it's not about money.

I can only imagine your conversation with the potential cabin renters. "Well, we can rent you the cabin, but you'll have to give me that popcorn for my goose." This is a neat post!

They were leaving, and I said "Is that a big jug of popcorn in the back of your SUV?" and she said yes, and I said "I have to have it." It was many years old, and she brought it all the way from Salt Lake City in case they might decide to use some of it, but they didn't get around to it.

Now you have reminded me of Quackers, I miss him all over again. I buy the regular microwave popcorn, no diet. But I don't eat it a lot -- it's just for that salt craving I get at times.

I am working on a Quackers movie to post. Gosh! he was fun. He brought us out of our shell and had us doing things we'd never do left to ourselves. I could almost understand what it'd be like to have children and want show them a good time.

You need some of the water queensland is having again, flooded last year and this year had 3 cyclones dumping more waterthan usual.
Read an article in the national geographic magazine about the Colarado river being cleaned up in 1986, hardly any water at the end , with all the farms being ruined by salt, then in the same article homes down there having septic tanks reclaiming the water for drinking.
without the snow melt things are looking grim there
comment by kevinshere on Jan 26, 2013 10:14 PM ()
It's grimmer and grimmer. There is talk about building a system to bring water from the eastern part of the country, but people are so money hungry any more, these public projects are just doomed if land is involved.

I will wish really hard for you to get some rain!

Thanks. I'm sitting here watching every cloud.

I come from a long line of popcorn devotees. I have an old-fashioned long handle stove-top shaker popcorn popper with a sliding screen top, which my Dad had made by a sheet-metal craftsman. He had two made extra deep with extra thick metal, one for himself and the other for me as a wedding present in 1975. They were no longer being made commercially. I am still using it. Just put the kernels in and shake away over a burner. I just made a big batch of white popcorn to watch the U.S. Figure Skating Championships. Let me know when you get back to your Colorado home and I'll send you some popcorn. It's just $3 for a bag of kernels. Love the photos of Quackers!

When I was growing up we had a popper like that. And also had one made of screening that had a sliding lid. They should be around here somewhere. I found a good deal on popcorn in bags the other day, made me think of seeing if Quackers would like to come back here this summer.

I'm awaiting for Mr. Wolf to return!!!!
comment by greatmartin on Jan 26, 2013 3:03 PM ()
No kidding. One of these years he is not going to return, and I will eventually figure it out when he doesn't show up for a whole summer. There will never be another like him.

How about that.

I hope you are doing well, Fredo. I saw your pictures with the wrap coat on Facebook. Tres chic.

Bless you. Are you back at the river?
comment by jondude on Jan 26, 2013 12:16 PM ()
No, not yet. I'm going back the beginning of March, so am starting to rearrange my mind around that and pile things in boxes. Took the cat for a practice four hour drive, etc.
