Eloise's Outing

Steve and I decided to meet in St. George, halfway between our two homes, and I took Eloise so she could get some practice riding in the car.

On the way there, the entire two hours, she cried and panted. I pulled over at one point and tried to get her to drink some water, but she wasn't interested.

When we got there, she curled up on the back seat floor and went to sleep. And all the way home she was calm, didn't say boo, just sat on the console next to me and looked out the windows at the scenery.

When we got back home, she had to check out the house to make sure it was somewhere she'd been before and that nothing had changed. Then, she settled down to a nap in front of the fire. I was experimenting with the flash on the camera, so these are a little blurry.

My plan for our next road trip is to drive for about an hour, then stop for a rest so Eloise can calm down. I hope it works because it's no fun having a distressed cat in the car.

Glad to hear it. It's not good if those inner eyelids persist in being visible. Hugs to all there.

My Winnie is a loud yowler in the car, and PoohBear is just plain terrified. They ride in a car only to the vet, so I doubt things will change. Beautiful Eloise may well adapt happily to car travel for you. ((((HUGS))))

I told her hello and here is a hug from Martha. My life would be complete (for about a minute) if I could get her to settle down after maybe 30 minutes of yowling instead of hours. She turns it off like a switch, so there has to be a magic series of actions that get her switched off sooner.

Man is she a cool looking cat. So pretty! I am glad at least half the ride was enjoyable.

I'll tell her you said she's pretty. I think she knows it: a little bit of a diva sometimes. Once she settles down, it's all a person could hope for in a traveling pet.

Glad Eloise calmed down. My late cat Sniff always got sick in the car, even a short ride, and eventually died of stomach cancer so that was (it is obvious now) a signal that his sensitive stomach dated back to kittyhood. I think Eloise is totally beautiful. Her car thing seems to be emotional.

A couple of my cats always took a dump right away after we set out, so we took along something disposable we could toss in the nearest trash, and that worked out well.

Hope all you are doing well. I'm a little bit worried about that photo of Hobbster's eyes - we shouldn't be seeing those inner eyelids like that - it's usually a sign of something wrong, inflammation for one thing.

A song by tex morton says it all-- THE CAT CAME BACK ---it knew when it was on a good thing like eloise.Second time out she will be more relaxed
comment by kevinshere on Jan 25, 2013 9:38 PM ()
This was her second time. Next time I'll try my idea of stopping for about 15 minutes not long into the trip and see if that works.

Eloise is so pretty. I hope Steve appreciated her beauty.
comment by elderjane on Jan 25, 2013 4:19 PM ()
I'm sure he did, but he didn't get a very close look at her, just through the car window.
reply by troutbend on Jan 25, 2013 5:10 PM ()
And what a huge tail she has.
comment by boots586 on Jan 25, 2013 1:45 PM ()
It's huge! Her tail doesn't shed very much (she moults clumps of very fine fur all over the place), but when I find one of the hairs from her tail, it's 8 inches long. The neighborhood kitty who comes around all the time has the same coloration as Eloise, but a skimpy little scraggly tail.

That is one be-draggled looking kittie in that last shot.

From some angles she can look just like road kill, but we try not to bring it up.

Has she heard: What's New Pussycat (Tom Jones), Look What the Cat Dragged In (Poison), Cat Daddy (Rej3ctz), The Siamese Cat Song (Peggy Lee from Lady & the Tramp), I Taut I Taw a Puddy Tat (Mel Blanc), Black Cat (Janet Jackson), Year of the Cat (Al Stewart), Stray Cat Strut (Stray Cats), Cat’s in the Cradle (Harry Chapin), Mean-Eyed Cat (Johnny Cash), Cat Scratch Fever (Ted Nugent), The Cat (Jimmy Smith), Cat People (David Bowie), Cat in the Window (Petula Clark & The Turtles), All Cats are Grey & The Love Cats (The Cure), Phenomenal Cat (The Kinks), Honky Cat (Elton John), Pussycat Meow (Deee-Lite) and the ever popular The Cat Came Back (Fred Penner).

I think I'll play The Cat Came Back for her as a reminder for the next time she escapes to the outdoors.

You have too much free time!
reply by boots586 on Jan 25, 2013 1:43 PM ()
Nobody, NOBODY can relax like a cat! Glad you both made it home safe and sound.
comment by steve on Jan 25, 2013 12:59 PM ()
Yeah, you too.

It is obvious who is boss--and she didn't have to work too long or too hard to train her slaves right!!!!
comment by greatmartin on Jan 25, 2013 12:53 PM ()
She really is the boss.
reply by troutbend on Jan 25, 2013 5:04 PM ()
She's so beautiful! I know what it's like to have a stressed out cat in the car. I think our cat is finally getting used to it. It's kind of funny but he seems to do better when we sing to him. Don't know why.
comment by maggiemae on Jan 25, 2013 11:49 AM ()
Now that you mention it, she sort of quieted down when I turned up the volume on the car stereo, so I'll have to remember it in case it does help. In the course of the 13 hour drive to Colorado there's lots of time to experiment and find her favorite songs.
