Looserobes on Eddie Fisher, R. I. P.

Eddie Fisher, who sang “Oh My Papa” in the Fifties, died Wednesday at 82. It is said that the cause of death was “complications from hip surgery,” which sounds suspiciously like physician error to me. Of course, in America’s hospitals, one can die of acute hangnail these days, in tandem with an institutionally-borne staph infection.

Though I never cared for Fisher’s music, his success with beautiful women bordered on the incomprehensible. The guy’s wives included Debbie Reynolds, Liz Taylor, and Connie Stevens. Of course, they all ended in divorce – plus two more marriages after that – but what a résumé!
I wonder how he missed out on Kim Novak and Doris Day.

Fisher’s greatest accomplishment, perhaps, was his daughter Carrie, a noted female curmudgeon who once said, “Instant gratification takes too long.”

Anyone who doubts Eddie Fisher’s lifetime accomplishments should go visit the Hollywood Walk of Fame where he has TWO stars: one for music and one for TV (he once had his own show). As far as I’m concerned, the guy ought to have THREE stars on the Walk of Fame, except the imprint in the third one should be a body part other than the palm of his hand.

I always thought he was good-looking when he was younger. He dumped Fisher for Taylor; Taylor dumped him for Burton. You reap what you sew.

Let me get this straight. This post is via Looserobes? What's the word on him?

Yup, it's from himself. He's retired from blogging, but every so often he just can't help himself so sends me something to post.

From what I ever read or heard of Eddie Fisher he was a man of few redeeming qualities. Obviously he had a remarkable taste in women, whom he married and divorced. He figured in his later years a way to make money and get back into the spotlight was to write a book that sleazy book, showing little regard for those women he married. I believe it was jealousy..plain and simple, these woman were far more talented then he could ever be.

I typed the manuscript for Eddie Fisher's bio for a free-lance editor who gave me the work while I was at Harper & Row. At one point, I said to the editor (he was Burton Beals) that I hadn't realized before what a sleaze Fisher was. Burton replied, "Oh, s..., I I thought I had pretty well edited all that out." What was striking is that he said he wasn't that "into" Debbie Reynolds but that he was manipulated into marrying her. What struck me was how vindictive he was in talking about all his exes. Everything, I mean everything, was their fault. I wasn't a fan, anyway, his style and look, and boyish charm always eluded me. His obits talk about how dippy women were about him. For me, that's a mystery.

Funny thing: None of the affairs or divorces would even make page one these days. Not unless drugs or beastiality were involved.
