John Singer Sargent

Mr. and Mrs. I. N. Phelps Stokes

I find this portrait so interesting, and because I have no idea what Jeri's granddaughter Sara looks like, this is how I picture her - spunky and cute, the outstanding one of that couple.

This is definitely one of my favorite Sargent pieces.

Coming across this brightened my day.

The Sargent colors and rendering are lovely. I won't comment on the gender dynamics but I will say, for all his skill (or maybe it was deliberate) the female is grossly out of proportion. He gave her a pinhead. Check it out.

I think it's the clothes - the style of the day was to have all that volume, so maybe the pinhead look was in fashion? She does appear to have a very long neck.

The striking features of his subjects amazes me. JSS was one of the painters I admired from day one in college. Notice his treatment of the husband, standing in the shadows behind the woman, his face partially obscured and with a strong and willful stance, feet apart, arms folded.

Yes, and notice his treatment of the woman -- a tiny, tiny head on the body of an Olympic swimmer. What's up with that. Did he do it on purpose? His technique, of course, is fabulous, but perhaps he didn't like women.

Hard to believe someone with what looks like her spirit would be saddled with such a snot as her husband looks to be. I wonder what he thought about this when it was finished. He looks kind of like one of my college boyfriends, and he would have posed with this scowl and then laughed about it later.

I love his beautiful women.

This one is so striking, and it's more than an external beauty, we get a sense of her personality.

If you asked me outright what kind of art I like, I'd probably give an evasive answer, but like that old cliche, I know what I like when I see it.

Not a Sargent fan but do admire what he has done--if that makes sense.

I haven't seen all that much of his work. This came in an email today, and I liked the look on that girl's face.
