Disappearing Brands & More Creepy Neighbors

One of our TV stations posted an article about brands that we will probably not see after 2013.

Avon

Avon’s long time CEO was ousted late last year after nearly wrecking the company, and earnings haven't improved with the replacement. The market has no confidence in the cosmetics company, although there's rumor of a possible takeover by Coty.

Metro PCS

This tiny carrier has lost pretty much any chance it may have had to compete with larger mobile providers T-Mobile, AT&T, Verizon and Sprint-Nextel. Investors have virtually abandoned the company.

The Oakland Raiders

The Raiders' Oakland stadium contract expires next year, and managing owner Mike Davis has said he may move the NFL team back to Los Angeles to get a better stadium deal. Santa Clara is also a possibility.

[Santa Clara Raiders? Hard to imagine.]

Suzuki cars

Even with aggressive sales tactics, Suzuki is having a hard time improving its position in the American market. Sales are down and nearly every other manufacturer has flooded the market with cheap, fuel-efficient models.

Research in Motion (Blackberry phones)

Research In Motion once owned the smartphone market with its BlackBerry products, but it's now behind the times and being pounded relentlessly by Apple and Google's Android products. The company’s board recently said it was reviewing "strategic options," which would include a sale.

Talbots (Womens clothing)

Battered retailer Talbots is supposed to be taken private by Sycamore Partners, but the offer has been delayed for some reason. It may be because there's virtually no solution to making the company viable again. It closed more than 100 stores recently, and lost money every year for the past five years.

[I have always liked their clothes.]

American Airlines

American's parent company filed for bankruptcy last November, and the troubled airline is now rumored to be in talks with US Airways about a possible merger.

[We all lose when there is less competition in the airline market.]

In other news, there is a strange story out of Denver that falls into the Creepy Neighbors category.

"Officers responding to complaints of a foul smell in a south Denver apartment building made a gruesome yet bizarre discovery -- the decomposing body of a woman with her husband and dog sitting nearby.

Denver police were called to an apartment after neighbors complained about the smell.

Police entered the apartment using the manager's key and were immediately confronted by a Great Dane in the hallway. The officers also saw a man slumped in a chair blocking the doorway entrance to the living room.

One of the officers told the dog to "leave" and the dog "then turned and jumped on to the couch where officers observed an obvious deceased [woman] slumped on the couch."

When they asked the man how long the woman had been dead, he replied, "She's not dead. She's fine," according to the affidavit. The man appeared to be either intoxicated or "out of sorts," the affidavit said.

Police said the dog "Lola" was "guarding" the woman's body, and as a detective approached "the dog became agitated and began barking," the affidavit said. Officers called animal control, who removed the dog from the apartment.

She was 32 years old, the man was identified as her husband. Police said the woman appeared to have been dead more than 10 days and her body was in an advanced state of decomposition. A maintenance manager said he saw the husband coming and going during the previous two weeks, going to the liquor store, but had not seen the wife.

Neighbors said they wondered what was up when they noticed a bad smell coming from Apt. 308. "The hallway kind of started to smell weird, but it's like, you live in an apartment building. A million different people live around here," one of the neighbors said.

I won't miss Avon, don't care about most of the other companies... but I've been sorry about RIM, for the sake of the tablet, not the phones. Their internet was unthinkably slow. But as you say, competition is needed and I like it when other companies besides Apple make tablets. Apple must not have the entire market.

I hope Apple's new United States-made products work out.

yikes on the story... but I wonder what happened to the pup.
Talbots, I didn't know they were still around. Blackberries are going down, for sure. Its sad in a way.

That poor dog. Great Danes are sort of a sad animal anyway because they don't live very long.

I sold Avon for 13 years. Now I can't find a local seller except for kiosks in malls. I still think of the Brooklyn Dodgers. How many years has that been?
comment by boots586 on Nov 1, 2012 11:16 AM ()
The Dodgers moved to LA in 1957. Time flies. They're still Brooklyn to me, too. You've got all those Avon boxes, don't you? Did you see that Hoarders where she had a roomful of those Avon boxes - I thought of you. They do look like a very handy size and shape for storage.

Metro PCS was already bought out, I believe by T-Mobile but not sure.

It was funny to me to see the Metro PCS item in that list, because I was just at a friend's house on Monday and she was reading a letter talking about the take-over. I'm not sure if she had an account with them or with the other company.

At least they called animal control. Too many out-or-control cops are shooting everything that moves these days.

I felt sorry for the dog, it was doing what it thought best, now it has to find a new family, if it can.
reply by troutbend on Oct 30, 2012 2:06 PM ()
And I won't miss any of those companies!
comment by greatmartin on Oct 30, 2012 9:33 AM ()
Me neither.

So sad about the incident there.Avon?I thought that this was long gone

Avon was a big deal when women stayed home to keep house, and they welcomed a visit from the Avon lady. My father-in-law always joked that she was the only person who ever went into their front room. Times have changed, and online sales have changed how America shops.

Sorry about Talbot's -- good looking clothes without trashy designs. The man in the apartment sounds deranged. Sorry for the dog. Hope she finds a good home.

When I needed something tasteful and grownup that fit really well, I turned to Talbots.

Oh, gag! Talk about denial!

I wonder if we'll ever find out the whole story.

How about London? Many in the NFL are talking about a London franchise. Their name could be changed to the London Jetlags.
comment by jondude on Oct 30, 2012 7:15 AM ()
That's a great name, the Jetlags. It is hard to imagine it working out to have a London-based franchise for American football. Do we have an American-based franchise for British football? Did I see a promo on Sunday for something like that?

I doubt the Raiders will be going to Santa Clara, which presently has under construction a new 68,500 seat facility for the S.F. 49ers, who have maintained their administrative office and training camp there since 1987.

Sometimes I try to remember where some of the teams used to be located. Like the Cardinals - the name was more suited to St. Louis than Arizona because the cardinal is not a western bird.

I hate to see Talbot's go out of business because they had good petite styles. I haven't bought Avon in years. What was that man thinking? He
must have had no sense of smell.
comment by elderjane on Oct 30, 2012 5:44 AM ()
I liked that observation that he was either drunk or out of sorts, was really surprised at how young the woman was.

SUZUKI cars here are doing well --especially the 4 wheel drive ones--- thats one find i would not like
comment by kevinshere on Oct 30, 2012 2:14 AM ()
They will probably continue to sell Suzuki in your country, they'll just go away from the United States.
