Car Cat and Fox Farewell

Driving across Utah, I'm holding out the camera and hoping some of the cat ends up in the picture. She cried for 6 hours solid, that's 300 miles. Half of it was in the cat carrier, and half of it was while she crawled all over the inside of the car, sometimes throwing herself at the dashboard, sometimes on the back deck panting and crying.

Then, at Grand Junction, we stopped to gas up the car and she changed personality. I stopped the car on the way out of the parking lot to make sure she was still in the car, she was so quiet. She was there all right, but it was like a different cat. For the remaining 7 hours, she quietly rested on the back seat, quietly rested on the center console, or quietly rested on my lap. She is a small kitty, only about 9 pounds, so can curl up in small places like the console.

Now she has settled into the new home.

Here is the last picture of the fox for 2012. He was there on Tuesday morning, the day before I left. He looks sad here. I hope he makes it through the winter.

Also, saying goodbye to the fish:

A dog DOING the driving is okay as long as he/she isn't sitting on someone's lap!!!!

I hope Mr Fox does ok without his occasional doggie biscuits! I hope the rest of your trip went smoothly.

It went so smoothly I took a detour down a back road just to see what it was like. It was spur of the moment, all depending on how well the cat was behaving, and she was, so I did.

Wait just a darn minute here-you were driving, taking pictures and holding onto a loose cat all at the same time? All you were missing was the cell phone!

Oh, I know, it's horrible. You know how boring those long stretches out in the middle of nowhere are, no traffic, no towns.

My cat yowled and talked to me for 7 minutes going to the vet in his carrier yesterday. I can't imagine hearing that yowling and crying for 6 hours. Meow!

I was starting to wonder how it'd be if she rode in her carrier in the trunk for awhile. Surely there would be enough air.

you enjoy watching out for that fox , hope it comes back in the spring, and the fish can have a rest now to grow bigger and keep your customers happy

I hope the fish are resting up, as you say.

It's stressful driving when your cat is yowling for hours on end! Glad she settled down. Perhaps she saw that getting out of the car was not an option as the gas station was unfamiliar territory. Do you always winter over in another state?

Yes, we are compromising on each other's dream. One of us wants to live in Las Vegas, gamble, bowl, and smoke cigars. One of us wants to live in the a lovely spot in the mountains.

Always a sad time for you. The fox knows. He/she will wait for you in the Spring. Once your car stopped and you got out, your cat realized it was not so scary or dangerous. Their little brains work in very logical ways.

I'm not sure what reassured her, but have six months before I have to worry about it again.

I am relieved that you are back safe and that Eloise finally accepted her
journey. Maybe she will turn out to be as good a traveler as Buddy was.

I hope she remembers how much fun it was to just go with the ride and not carry on.

I hope you gave the fox a going away treat -- yes? As for Eloise, it's good she got used to the car. What stress to think your pet is having a hard time. My late cat Sniff, for sure, always got sick in the car. It was a lifelong thing with him. Once I got him down to Florida for good, I promised him he'd never have to fly again.

One of our cats always took a dump in the car right away, so we carried a disposable thing we could stop and throw away. Once that was out of the way, they did fine.

Yes, the fox misses you already!

I try not to think about the times he will come and wait. He'll notice the house is different, though.

The fox was sad because you were leaving!
Did you know it is illegal in most States to have any animal in your lap when you are driving? Do I really have to report you?
comment by greatmartin on Nov 1, 2012 7:07 PM ()
We see people in Colorado and Nevada letting their little fluffy dogs steer their car, so must be okay out here in the west. Sometimes the ranchers have their cow dog steer the pickup while they unload hay bales for the cattle, but that's not a lap, that's the dog doing the driving.

Poor cat was heart broken

It was something, all right. I was starting to get heart broken myself.

I'm glad Eloise calmed down and got used to the car ride. We had one that cried all the way from Fla to Utah. I hope the fox isn't too domesticated.

The fox was there less often this year - every 8 to 10 days, so I think he either found another family and came to see me out of politeness (and the homemade dinner rolls) or he had a good hunting environment out in the wild. I do worry that he would walk up to anybody, but he's always been that way.
