Weather and the Garage Door

We have had an unusually heavy rainy season – daily storms flooding the streets and driveways – there would be a lull and then it would storm again, so that every time I thought I might try to get out for a walk or a bide ride, the rains would come.

And now we are awaiting a storm brewing in the Gulf that has been characterized as perhaps turning into a hurricane -- it has just been named: Karen. We'll see if it comes our way. So far it is projected to head for the mainland when it gets to the panhandle. But Charley was doing the same and decided to turn right at our latitude at the last minute - glug.

During all this, our garage door finally bit the dust and we couldn’t use it at all. We got Door King to replace it but it took a week for delivery. I used the side door to get my bike in, but had to move a ton of stuff to make room for it. When I wheeled it out, it would catch on the many bushes lining the way and I would get stuff in the spokes. Ed has acquired a riding lawn mower and we shoved stuff this way and that to make room for it. I am thrilled beyond sanity that I now have electronics for the door and we can again open and close it remotely. The button near the driveway hasn’t been working in some time, so what I would do is get my bike out, push the button next to the house and run out to the driveway before the door could come down on my head.

The new door is metal, white – it looks so nice, I am not even that interested in painting it to match the rest of the house (pale teal, as you might guess). The old door, wooden, in place since the house was built in 1971, was caked with dirt, and bug debris, and I would often think I might take a crack at it with a broom wrapped in a towel. Well, after thinking about this for a few years, I now don’t have to bother. Sometimes things work themselves out.

I have other projects I am thinking about and perhaps divine providence will help me out with these as well.

xx, Teal

New door sounds nice. I'm now interested in what this teal-colored house looks like. Any photos?

Haven't taken any in quite a while -- will do and post a few.

Alas, no basement storage in this apartment building and no resident super and no elevator. Outdoor storage = stolen bike. The only secure place to keep a bike is in the apartment. Sigh.... Wish me luck!

Thanks, dear T, for your info. Bike shopping is proving to be very confusing. I need gears because of my fibromyalgia issues and I will have some hills to deal with around me. But not I think a gazillion of them. I think I'd be happy with a used/refurbished bike, but I also need a lightweight bike so I can cart it up three flights of stairs to my apartment. Light = Pricey. I'll keep hunting.... xoxo

I used to carry my bike 3 flights up to our flat when I was a kid. I'd hate to have to do it now. Can you make an arrangement with your bldg. super to keep it in the basement? Storing a bike is a pain -- who knew handlebars could be so troublesome. I bought a bike cover so I could leave it outdoors, and the damn thing won't stay on because of the handlebars. Hiss, boo. Now, of course, with our great new door, I can just press a button and get it in the garage right away.

These new garage doors are wonderful. You must be feeling stronger and
I am delighted. Chronic fatigue is miserable.

I have come out of chronic fatigue in the last several months. I have changed my routine -- maybe that's not forever -- I used to get up at 5:30 -- now it's 6:30 - feed the cats, and do ballet stretches. Now, often, I go back to bed and promise myself I'll do the ballet routine later and sometimes I do. I had stopped taking Laminine a while back -- when I started again, I immediately started to feel better. I wrote about it. It's a protein supplement. The other new thing is I bought an electronic bug repellent. You wear it or have it nearby -it covers a 15-foot area. It emits a lemony scent that mosquitoes, noseeums, etc. can't stand. This allows me to stop using Bug Off. This is Florida. I was using Bug Off daily. I am thinking I will be better off without this chemical. And I still try for an hour bike ride or an hour walk daily -- and sometimes I can do both. For the first time since I lost energy, I am feeling much more normal, that is, for me, at this age. One nurse said to me a while back, "I want to be you when I grow up."

T, I'm bike hunting. What kind of bike do you have? Brand name? How many gears?

Hi Ms. Marta, I have two bikes - one is pricy ($300) with 4 gears that I do not need. It is in need of major overhaul, and I am not using it. It has an odd name, not a household word and right now, it's in the shed. When I get back there, I will look for the name. I do intend to have it worked on, unless it costs too much. I have a cheapy ($125) I bought, no gears. There are no hills around here. Both bikes are about 2 inches too high for me. I have to be very careful stopping and starting. If I were to buy another one, I'd just rely on the vendor to steer me to the right bike. Schwinn is the only name I remember from my kidhood that was considered top of the line. Sorry I am not more knowledgable.

It's really something when the garage door goes - you find out all kind of things about the way they work, more than you wanted to. Congratulations on the new one, it will last forever, or as good as.
