The Saga of the Family Room Furniture

A year or more ago, I was more than grossed out by the condition of the fabric on our sofa and love seat and Ed indulged me. We went to Macy’s and bought a leather set. As is often the case for any but the most pricey leather, the cushions are not removable -- not the back, not the seats. This particular set also has the the wide pillow-like flat arm rests.

As luck would have it, we keep throws on them because we don’t want cat scratches, but this looks messy. I was told I could get slip covers with elastic that would take care of the problem. I bought one set for the love seat to test. It doesn’t work because one of the pieces must enclose the cushions and, as stated, they are not removable. So we will take that back.

Now Nadine, gtf, E mailed me that Khohl’s “has them”. Has what? I told her what was wrong. What can I find at Kohl’s that will solve my problem? The photos in the Kohl’s link she sent me don’t look any different than what I bought.

The other solution is to buy what are called “pet throws” – they look neat enough, but we all know that things slip on leather, so I am not sure.

Any suggestions, all you home makers out there?

The other bummer is that even if I find slip covers that work well, I won’t be seeing the leather look I wanted. Snarl.

And the little furries go their merry way complicating my life, and making a lot of poop they know full well I can’t sell on E bay.

xx, Teal

I think Dramus has the right idea. I was thinking velcro but it would ruin
the leather and wouldn't be practical. Fortunately, Rex hasn't wanted to sit
on the couch.

You don't wanna hear my solution. Hint: I LOL-ed at your last sentence.

Don't look at me. I don't sit on our livingroom furniture. We bought it because it matched the fireplace bricks not because it's comfortable.

The family room is our TV room -- the living room is full of antiques -- if the piano weren't in there, I'd hardly see it.

Why cover up something that you wanted, liked and enjoy? So it won't last as long--it will looked 'lived in'--leave the set as is and enjoy!!!!

Ed is the one who is furniture-protective. He got really upset over a tiny scratch the other day. Go figure. (We also have role reversal in the malls - he shops in the men's stores, I wait in the outdoor patio.)

Alas, no. My sofa has pet throws and blanket throws, but since I prefer floral patterns, if things get hopelessly beaten up by my dear kitties, I just keep reupholstering. That usually take years if I choose the right fabric, and by then the cushions/springs need some rehab anyway. My sofa does work with slip covers either, but I love it — and my precious cats.

Maybe the non-skid rubber stuff you put under a throw rug -- cut a piece and put it under the throw.

That's a good idea. Thanks.
