Last night, despite eating more and drinking more, Ed experienced another severe hypoglycemic episode around 4 a.m. -- inability to talk, just garbled efforts, inability to move. His groaning woke me up -- I was now totally alert to what was happening and immediately called the EMTs. They started an IV in the house and got him to a point where he could stand and be helped to the gurney in the areaway. He is back at the hospital, and now resting in comfort.
I dressed, collected things I knew he would need, fed the kitties, skipped breakfast, and got there about 6 a.m. He had IV fluids and sugars, and they again changed his antibiotic – also intravenously. He was fed before I got there and brought him some French toast as well. He ate everything but the crusts, so since I didn't have breakfast, I ate those.
I also went to the cafeteria and got myself a fried egg, cold and rubbery, two small sausages, also cold, coffee with coffee mate, an okay biscuit and some blueberries. Coffee mate should be illegal.
Later Sol came to the hospital and brought a corned beef sandwich for Ed and a Greek gyro for me (spiced lamb, in case you don't know). What a sweetie. Ed was alert and articulate -- a great relief -- the symptoms mimic severe dementia. He will stay in the hospital for a few days and they will try to pinpoint what is causing these wild swings in blood sugar levels. Also, he is now willing to get rehab at a facility instead of winging it at home. He got moved from the ER to a room around 2:30 and I stayed till about 5 and then got home to take care of kitties. I am encouraged that getting into a rehab unit where he can be monitored closely will make the difference. I think the infection he is fighting is a factor.
Meanwhile, Sol had been traveling to my house every day with Sasha, her new kittie (a month old or so) because her older cat, Monet, was having hissy fits. Happy ending: she showed me a video taken with her smart phone ... Monet has warmed up and the two were frolicking and having a great time with each other.
And yes, I expect to feel better after getting some sleep.
xx, Teal
