Obama -- Too Many Emotions

I am delighted that Obama got the mandate he deserves. His speech Tuesday in Grant Park (that I once knew well) was inspiring and hopeful and brilliant. I didn’t just want him to win, I wanted him to smash the opposition. I think he did that. Many moderate Republicans voted for Obama. The “base” they talk of was overcome. Florida went for Obama. That is major. What a relief that we didn’t have a close election that would divide the country even more.

My local newspapers, the Fort Myers News Press, reported that my little island went 50 percent for Obama. Well, that is astonishing. This used to be Klan country. I am glad the demographic is changing. It makes our being here bearable and gives me the feeling there might be people we can relate to.

When I went out to pick up my newspaper this morning, a couple I know, staunch Republicans, was passing by. I have not discussed politics with them so perhaps they do not know my affiliation. Despite their blind spot, they are rather nice people in many respects. They greeted me cheerfully, but I know they were curdling inside. "Eat worms," I thought, and smiled.

And I have become closer with a neighbor who shares my philosophy on many issues and that is a great comfort. (Nadou, if you read this, that would be you.)

My state went solidly red early on and I sat and thought about why. The young people and the college kids voted for Obama as did those of us who were really passionately involved. The religious right got the victory here and in Kansas and Texas. None are as blind as those people.

This is a trans formative election...America will never be the same...with the new "We" generation going for Obama 2 to 1 and them becoming the dominant force in 2016 finally displacing the baby boomers...we're in for some dramatic changes in years to come...as the Republican Party lays shattered, this huge majority bodes ill tidings for them...they are energized and involved and seemed determined to save themselves...I guess they want to clean up after the baby boomers who up to now, seemed to have screwed things up?
